Samsung has announced a fleet of new handsets scheduled to hit shops soon. One of these smartphones is the Galaxy XCover. Compared to other new phones by the Korean phone giant such as the Galaxy R, the new phone comes with mediocre specs. It comes packed with an 800 MHz Marvell MG2 single-core processor. Compared to the R's 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core processor Tegra 2 AP20H chipset, it is underpowered. It comes with a 3.65 inch capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. Compared to the S2's 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display with 480 x 800 pixels of resolution, it is doesn't seem to cater more to your viewing pleasure. The phone sports a 3.2 megapixel camera. This is puzzling since most smartphones offer a megapixel count of 5. With these specs in mind, does the phone have anything unique to offer? Despite these rather simple specs, it is one of toughest handsets around just like the tough Motorola Defy.
This is one of the most rugged mobile phones around. It comes with IP67 certification. This means that you can submerge the phone in as much as 1 meter of water without damaging its internal components. Since the Samsung Galaxy XCover can be dunked in as much as a meter of water, you never have to worry about the usual spills, rainfall, or dropping the phone in the toilet. It is highly resistant to water damage.
IP67 certification also means that the smartphone is highly resistant to dirt and dust. These are two of the most dangerous substances that can create a lot of damage to the internal components of mobile phones. Over time, once dust begins to settle within your phone, this is tantamount to paying for repairs. You might even have to get a replacement handset. Since the Samsung Galaxy XCover is highly water resistant, it is also dust resistant. It prevents dust particles from damaging its internal components.
We now know that the smartphone is water and dust proof. However, is it scratch and shock proof? When it comes to the phone's display, it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. With this protective thin layer of glass, you never have to worry about the usual bumps and scratches. If you accidentally drop the phone, there is no need to worry as well. It is also shock resistant.
The Samsung Galaxy XCover may not come with the most cutting edge specs. However, it is one of the most rugged smartphones around. You can drop it, submerge it in water, and try to scratch it. None of these will damage the Gingerbread-powered handset.
