In November of 2011, the latest iteration of Android was first featured on the Galaxy Nexus. This was the first time we saw Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in action. Since this is the latest software version of Google's mobile operating system. Every Android user wanted the update to roll out to their device. Sadly, updates have to be tested by device manufacturers before they are rolled out to the public. This is done to make sure the update is compatible with their unique user interface. Sadly, this does take time to test. This version may have been out since November. However, it can months for manufacturers to conduct tests properly. This is the same case with the Samsung Galaxy S2.
For those who cannot wait, developers have devised a way for you to enjoy the latest Android update on your phone. It involves manually installing an unofficial Ice Cream Sandwich ROM. This will allow you to get the latest version without having to wait for manufacturers to test the software. However, there are risks involved.
First of all, this firmware is still in its developmental stages. This means that there might be bugs that have been ironed out yet. You might not get all the bells and whistles that you may have experienced on the Galaxy Nexus.
Aside from the bugs, there is always a possibility of something going terribly wrong during the installation. The Samsung Galaxy S2 is a high-end handset. This simply means that it doesn't come cheap. After all, it is a flagship model. If something were to go wrong, you might end up with an expensive brick.
The last disadvantage to installing an unofficial version of Ice Cream Sandwich is voiding your warranty. This is one of the reasons why not all users resort to installing unofficial versions. For them, the risks are just too high.
However, the technologically adept still prefer to go through the process. Not only does this allow them to enjoy Ice Cream Sandwich on their Samsung Galaxy S2. It also allows them to install apps, themes, and tools that factory settings simply do not allow them to do.
Should you wait or install the ROM. If you know what you're doing, then you may be interested in installing the firmware. However, if you're technologically challenged, you might want to wait for the official update to roll out. This will prevent you turning your expensive Samsung Galaxy S2 into an expensive brick.
