Spain has a wide variety of monuments in different cities, which act as tourism attraction sites. Besides the sandy beaches and resorts available in the country, the monuments play a great role in the major visitations made to the country.The city of Salamanca has several monuments that are sights to behold and carry lots of historical values. Apart from the Cathedrals and the Plazas, there are others which are very famous locally and internationally.
The Roman Bridge
The bridge was built in the 89AD when Emperor Trajan still ruled, but only a few acres of the bridge still stand as it was originally. The rest of the remains were affected by the 1626 flood, which swept them away. The bridge acted as route running from Merida to Astorga and was a very important aspect o Roman Silver. Verraco Iberico statue is found near the bridge.
Palace Anaya
This palace home of the oldest university in Salamanca was built in 1401. At present, the building had a neoclassical architectural style, which is very rare in the city, therefore attracting lots of people. This was designed by Juan de Sagarvinaga and it hosts the faculties of Languages and Philosophy today.
La Salina Palace
This is another attractive palace in the region whose building was ordered by a relative of Santiago, who was an archbishop in dedication to Alonso de Fonseca. This is one of the most magnificent and beautiful buildings of Renaissance in Salamanca. It contains arcades which are rounded and are medallion decorated and the patio inside has beautiful ornately features. This building houses Province offices of administration at present.
Orellana Palace
The uniqueness of this palace is the alternating rounded and triangular series of gables that cover first floor windows. The architecture appears cold suggesting influences of Herrera. Monterrey Palace is another palace that attracts people, because of ornaments and typical decorations used on the gallery situated on the top floor. The palace has changed hands and now it’s owned by House of Alba.
Other monuments worth visiting include Clavero Tower, Calatrava College, Casa de las Muertes also known as the house of dead and the Church of the Immaculate Conception. You will run of time before you run out of places to visit in Salamanca. Take time and enjoy the diversity in Spain’s heritage and understand things that you could never understand before.
