The sudden and frequent power cuts and power problems have generated demand of standby power solution. There are several critical electrical devices used across home, offices, and hospitals that need to be continuously powered and supported without any failure. Where UPS power solution is used to provide uninterruptible power supply for a limited period of time, standby power solution is used in conjunction with the UPS to ensure smooth and consistent power supply irrespective of the main power supply. Basically standby power supply comprises of a single diesel generator and a manual changeover switch. In the case of utility mains failure, the standby power generator can be manually started and by the changeover switch operation its output can be applied to the attached load.

Power Generators – The standby power generators produces electrical current from water, wind, solar energy and other methods. Standby power generators are used across different industries, large organizations and businesses, where critical loads need to be powered with reliable power source.
Diesel Generators – Generators that operates on diesel fuel is known as diesel generator and provide a clean and consistent source of power. During the time of power failure the generator can be started manually and uses compression method to generate heat and power. With the power back-up time limited with UPS system, a diesel generator can power the attached devices as long as diesel fuel is available.
UPS - Uninterruptible power supplies, available in online, offline and line interactive form, are used to provide a finite source of electrical current in the case of main utility power failure. During the case of power failure the battery of the UPS begins supplying the necessary current to the equipment attached to it.
Critical Loads and Applications
There are several organizations where there is requirement of the continuous power supplies, especially for the critical equipment used across these organizations. In such cases both UPS and standby diesel generator are used to meet the continuous power supply demand. Few such organizations include airport traffic control towers, data centers, hospitals and companies having large servers. Such organizations requires reliable secondary power source that can immediately power the critical devices at the time of power failure. The critical devices need to immediately power either through the UPSs or through the diesel generator.
