I run a small online business and do SEO myself. It took me years to discern a quality SEO product from bombastic marketing slogans, and I used to shy away from tools that attached me to any sort of paid subscriptions. Really, why should I pay upwards of 150 bucks per year on some bogus update if I can get a one-time sort of deal for 150 or less? I learned the hard way why this is the case. Get reading – this will save you a pretty penny.

Thus far I haven’t read anything informative about recurring fees in SEO tools. So I will be the first one to breach the murky subject: in SEO software, are paid updates a mere marketing trick?
I do SEO in-house. If you looked at consultant fees lately, you know that do-it-yourself SEO with SEO tools is times cheaper. But some webmasters, including myself, went overboard with their penny-pinching, to the point where cheap tools soon turned to useless, inadequate, or even dangerous.
First, I got SEO ELITE. First minor thing - I had to reload the tool each time the new version came out. A couple months in, I realized that my ranking results differ dramatically compared to manual search results. Great marketing job though – I was hooked and paid my 167 USD – pretty sure I wouldn’t have done it had I a chance to try it for free (option not available). I say that SEO Elite is an overbranded SEO freeware giving you wrong search data.
Then I got TRAFFIC TRAVIS. It was accurate but simple, too simple I would say – I was looking for a more serious product feature-wise. I think it it’s a nice tool for very basic SEO needs – not worth buying though if you plan to do some serious SEO work yourself.
And that’s when I got my hands on SEO POWERSUITE. Even the free version left SEO Elite and Traffic Travis in shambles. Unlike SEO Elite, it was accurate, and unlike Traffic Travis, it was easy to use yet not simplistic.
I bought it and have no regrets – the tools work fast and get updated automatically. I can’t say they are cheap – you pay once, 250-600 USD (depending on edition)*, and then each month ($10-20) for weekly algo updates of 700 search engines. I am not targeting all 700, but still. That’s just one example of the feature spectrum for this product and price. And, yes, I get accurate results thanks to search engine updates I pay for.
So how much penny-pinching are you doing with your SEO software? Are you paying for a basic freeware SEO tool that does not update regularly and gives you wrong results? In that case, discard it asap and get ready to pay for quality, because free is free for a reason.
