We asked the staff at a Maui resort to draw on their experience and offer some suggestions for planning a family vacation on Hawaii's second biggest island
|
Maui - the "second son" of the Hawaiian chain - is neither as densely peopled nor as geographically expansive as Hawaii's Big Island, but is a treasure and a tourist draw in its own right. The island is truly the hiker and nature buff's dream, with eight state parks dotting its territory, and two walkable mountains - Haleakala and Puu Kukui.
With the plethora of options for activities, it can be difficult to find ways to fit every excursion that interests you into a week-long vacation; it may be even harder if you're traveling with your entire family. To make things easier for families who are thinking of spending time on Maui, we asked the staff at the Royal Lahaina resort to draw on their experience and offer some suggestions for planning a Maui family vacation, and they came up with ideas - some tried and true, some unexpected.
Their first advice is to plan carefully and thoroughly, but to also try and enjoy the planning process itself - make the anticipation into an activity in and of itself; instead of being locked into an itinerary from the beginning, in an attempt to conform to the template of an ideal vacation, look at the list of available activities and come up with a more organic and inclusive feedback process, where adults and children all can offer suggestions, and where everyone's contribution is valued. You never know whose idea will take you off the beaten path and contribute to a unique experience that would have passed you by if you held to the typical tourist's experience.
Maui offers many different activities - sports, swimming, mountaineering, cycling and more; it's a good idea to cross-schedule outings and have backup plans, so that when your first choice doesn't pan out, you can switch in mid-stride without losing valuable time. This is why you should try and pack clothes and equipment even for activities that you don't expect to do - for example, bring warm clothes for mountain hiking even if you expect to stay at sea level, or pack swimwear even though you think you'll be walking the slopes of Haleakala the whole time.
A bonus tip - while there are shuttles that can get you around the island, many visitors choose to rent a car for greater flexibility. Expect to pay for parking at Whalers Village, Lahaina and Kaanapali (you may be able to get validated parking for relatively cheap if you patronize businesses). In South Maui, however, free parking is plentiful and easy to find!
At Royal Lahaina, you can enjoy all of these activities and more, thanks to our vacation deals that even include Maui golf packages for those of you who love to tee off under a tropical sky! Visit our website and learn more about the things you can do on Maui.
