Waterproofing membranes have evolved a lot in the past few years. That said there always looks like numerous products on the market. So what makes a waterproofing membrane highly effective, and how do you know what is the ideal product for you?

What is the best waterproofing membrane?

An ideal waterproofing membrane should have the following benefits:
1. Protect the substrate from moisture
2. More elasticity prior to breaking point
3. Dry quickly (and does not skin)
4. Dry without getting stressed
5. Be able to be bonded (eg. with tiles)
5. Have high chemical and abrasion reluctance
6. Be simple to implement
7. Be safe to cope with and non-toxic

Currently, there are two typical kinds of waterproofing membranes: acrylic and polyurethane. Polyurethane has a better tensile strength and extends much. Although, they usually have solvent based substances that are less secure to use. Bonding to them can also be problematic. Acrylic often requires much longer to dry and is little resistive to abrasion and few key chemicals.

Quality waterproofing membranes need to provide a waterproof obstacle but it must also handle assumed motion. This kind of motion, for example that at junctions, can easily be accommodated with bond breakers. They allow the waterproofing membranes to stretch instead of snap, taking advantage of the stretchy feature of the substance. The key idea is more like an elastic band. A long piece of elastic will stretch further before snapping than a short part of the same material.

The issue with unexpected movements

The obstacle exists in how much the waterproofing membrane has to extend to accommodate unanticipated breaks (those not addressed with bond breakers). Since the extension (mobility) is more than the elongation (stretch) ability of the waterproofing membrane, it will lead to a tear in the membrane possibly resulting in leaks.

So basically if the movement is more than the waterproofing membrane can stretch, then it will snap. A bond breaker enables the membrane to stretch lots more.

THE SOLUTION-
Placing the needed bond breakers is usually important. Though the structure of the membrane can also help. A waterproofing membrane that is harder with much extending capability means that it is highly forgiving and the bond breakers can be narrower. Basically the higher the elasticity, the later it will break and the greater the membrane’s internal (or tensile) power, the more likely it will de-bond and extend instead of snap. Do not forget that it is always great to install a bond breaker in all regions that are more likely to move.

Basement waterproofing membranes once finished turn pretty difficult because the water pressure is from the negative side; the trouble arrives when a waterproofing membrane cannot tolerate hydrostatic pressure from inside of the substrate and so fails. Water might get into a basement through many ways like through joints, walls, or floors. Different basement waterproofing membranes solve such issues.
