Right from cars to dinner sets, the lot we use in our daily life is made up of steel. Stainless steel is most commonly used in the manufacture of different restaurant units like kitchen units, sinks, bar counters and catering equipment. On account of the utility of steel in the field of building and designing, steel engineering is foremost preferred in today’s world. Metallurgy is the foremost key for steel engineering and the major focus lies choosing the best alloy of steel for a particular purpose. Steel engineers are experts in building lasting bridges, vehicles and other equipments without which survival is impossible in today’s lifestyle. Steel Engineers are expected to hold a Bachelor of Science degree in either Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
Steel engineering actually involves the method of choosing, using and building with steel. The primary responsibility of a steel engineer lies in using his knowledge of designing optimal steel buildings and products. While in choosing steel type, there are several things that the engineer needs to be concerned of. You might be familiar that steel is a combination of iron and carbon. However, there are different types of steel which could be differentiated only by means of its quality. A steel engineer determines the steel qualities by the materials that go into the mix with the steel. Steel engineers must be well-versed in the kinds of steel common in structural use. A steel engineer knows that certain steel alloys are more flexible than others. The flexible alloys might be useful for making pipes, but not for reinforcing bridges.
Before putting the steel into use, steel engineers initially look into the type of steel and check whether the material is fit to use. Steel engineers are responsible for creating structures that make the best possible use of steel they have selected. They plan on using each type of steel based on the purpose they are used for. For example, for creating simple kitchen utensils that requires less weight lighter steel is used. Heavier and durable steel can be used to make a structure strong and safe as possible. Steel engineers are generally civil or structural engineers with a focus in metallurgy. Few steel engineers work in ship building, aerospace and automobile factories. However, most of them are employed to work with architects in designing and constructing bridges, buildings, towers and oil rigs. Steel engineering related to fabrication specializes in the building of machinery and equipments by cutting, shaping and assembling components made from raw materials.
