There is a hot debate over the importance given to graphic design in websites. Some people argue that without innovative graphic images, a website loses its appeal that is necessary to hold visitors’ interest. Others believe that graphic design is given too much importance and is rather an overrated service in web design. While both the arguments are valid in their own sense, the role of graphic design in websites cannot be negated completely.
Primarily, graphic design was all about creating unique and attractive business cards, logos, banners and other print designs. However, since the surge of the Internet and business websites, graphic design has made an inroad in web design as well. Designing for the web is very different from designing for print, and this is why many people prefer to hire web designers instead of graphic designers for their websites. But there are some areas in web designing that need to be handled by the exclusive skills of a graphic designer.
In explicit areas including logo design, icons and illustrations, a graphic designer should be brought into role in web design, or else the website would turn out to be a disaster.
1. Logos- The logo design plays an important role in establishing a professional and reliable image of a brand. It creates powerful brand recognition and builds trust among the customers. Logo design is the job of a graphic designer and needs to be creatively done, while reflecting what the brand is all about. It should be unique, creative, simple and memorable. While a logo is minor area of a web design, it indirectly facilitates the brand building and growth of a company.
2. Icons- Another area in web design that needs the service of graphic design is icons. Not just websites, but web-based applications, social media and other web products use icons to improve website usability and enhance user experience. A graphic designer can create unique and innovative icons to catch the attention of the visitors and give a distinct reputation to the brand.
3. Illustrations- Graphics is all about visual appeal, and illustrations form a significant part of that. A graphic designer can create illustrations and images to evoke emotions among people who visit the website. Beautiful and business related illustrations can add credibility to the website and make it more appealing to the visitors.
These elements of graphic design can be used throughout a website, be it the Home page, About Us page, portfolio or contact information.
Many times even the most well-built websites fail to make a mark on the World Wide Web because of lack of zing. While web design plays the most significant role in building a website, making it technically strong and functional, graphic design is a very helpful support service that must be used to achieve complete success with your website.
