Medical science, especially surgical science, has been evolving in the recent times, thanks to the technological marvels being brought in by the human race. In the ordinary course, there will be two or three surgeons, several nurses and an anesthesiologist to carry out the simplest of surgeries. However with the evolution of robotics, such surgical procedure has been simplified and is being made a lot easier. With robotics in surgery you would now need only one doctor, an anesthesiologist and only up to two nurses in the operating room.
History:
The history of robotic surgeries shall be traced back to 1985 when robot, The PUMA 560, successfully documented a brain biopsy with the guidance of CT. The first laparoscopic surgery using robotics was in 1987 followed by The PROBOT, that performed a prostate surgery in 1988. It was in 2000, the Da Vinci Surgery System became groundbreaking, as it was the first robotic surgery system approved by the FDA for general laparoscopic surgery. Further advancements in the field were done by computer motion with ZEUS & AESOP robotic surgical systems.
Applications:
The major applications include cardiac surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Pediatrics, and Gynecology. They have also found applications in major cancer treatments as well.
Benefits:
Robotic surgical system offers benefits like improved diagnostic capabilities, quicker recovery period, and more convenience for the patients. The biggest benefit out of all is the ability of the surgeon to remotely handle the surgery on his patient who is far away from him, reducing the strain and stress of the physician. Doctors feel tiresome when the surgical procedures take a long time leading to hand fatigue; however robots always perform consistently smooth and steady.
Robotics surgery has been particularly beneficial for prostate cancer treatment and surgery. They have resulted in bringing superior results compared to traditional surgical procedures. The Da Vinci System’s electronics helps to make high precision movements during the surgery. Robotic surgery also leads to quicker recovery time than traditional surgery hence the healing process becomes faster.
Precautions:
Before Procedure: Do not have fluid or food 8 hours before surgery. Aspirin, vitamins or any other supplements should not be consumed 10 days prior to the procedure.
After Procedure: You’ll be hospitalized for a few days depending on your recovery period. You should be able to walk in no time & you’re advised not to do any heavy lifting or driving without doctor’s consent.
Robotics in surgery has ushered in a new era with great achievements and milestones in the area of medical sciences. A few more advancements in a technology of this sort can make it go beyond the limits of human intelligence.
