River rafting!
The word itself invokes a vision of excitement and adventure. Blue, rushing rapids and the adrenaline of rowing your boat through it with body, mind, spirit, and a team.
However, like any other adventure sports, river rafting also has its share of risks. Just because you crave adventure and are a risk-taker does not mean you have to be a fool. There are some simple tips you should follow before venturing out for rafting on river. Follow them and you are assured of unparalleled, safe excitement and experience.
Tip 1: Choose the right level of rafting: River rafting can be classified into three levels: basic, medium, and high. Depending on your needs and experience, choose the appropriate level. If you are a novice or a beginner in river rafting, then choose the basic level. Similarly, if you are very young or senior in age, then it is safer that you first attempt the basic level. Once you are comfortable with that level, then you can subsequently progress to higher levels.
Tip 2: Follow your guide: Always follow your guide’s instructions during river rafting. This is particularly important if you are a newcomer or a beginner. The guide will assess if a situation is potentially risky and will help you during tough situations.
Tip 3: Eat light: Eat a light meal before rafting. You should avoid heavy meals before rafting as this might lead to vomiting and nausea.
Tip 4: Wear suitable gear: Wear appropriate clothes during rafting. Avoid accessories and slippery shoes. Tennis shoes are very suitable for rafting as they are light, non-slippery, and protect your feet.
Tip 5: Be in a group: You should always go for rafting in a group, particularly if you are new to the sport or place. This is advised because often river rafters who go solo get lost or even worse. They are not able to get back and it becomes difficult to trace them.
Tip 6: Get trained: Understand the basic principles of the sport from your guide – how the raft operates, what are its safety features, what are the risks. River rafting, if ventured without proper training or practice, can become very dangerous.
Tip 7: Always wear a life jacket and a helmet: Never attempt river rafting without your life jacket. This will prevent you from drowning. The waters can be very tricky and even experienced swimmers may find it hard to tread them. Your life jacket should fit you perfectly. It should not be too loose or tight. Another major injury area could be your head. So always wear a safety helmet, which will protect you from rocks.
River rafting is an experience that should be in everyone’s bucket list. In other words, you must try it at least once in your life. However, to enjoy the sport to the fullest, follow the above tips and you will be safe, sound, and happy by the end of it.
