A woman in early 40s, is advised to have frequent (two or three times a week) unprotected sex for three months before consulting a fertility specialist by a doctor. Well, it's not sex for pleasure but with a reason, Motherhood.
|
A modern woman- independent, careerist, a woman of own rules. At this juncture of time, Motherhood has taken a back seat, although it's not unwanted. As a woman of 40 years of age, when she most probably finds it best to delve into motherhood after settling on her own feet, it becomes a bit hassled affair.
Those challenges may include the following:
? A higher likeliness of having pre-existing medical conditions that could aggravte during pregnancy or that could complicate a pregnancy
? A more challenging time getting pregnant
? A higher chance of miscarriage
? A greater risk of having a child with Down syndrome or other chromosomal abnormalcy
? A greater danger of labor and delivery hindrances
Even with these increased challenges, the odds are always in favor of a healthy pregnancy, as long as a woman takes good care of herself and get the appropriate screening, prenatal care and monitoring.
Checking up on your health: The first an foremost job to be done is consulting a health care provider. The doctor will assess existing health conditions that can affect pregnancy. Undiagnosed and untreated medical problems such as hypertension, diabetes and depression can have a significant impact on the safety of pregnancy.
Conceiving after 40: Chances of a woman conceiving begins to decline as she reaches her mid-30s. This fertility decline is more in the 40s, since the quality and quantity of eggs diminishes and ovulation problems increases.
As you age, so do your eggs: In the case of a woman of 40 it is likely that a higher percentage of the remaining eggs will be having anomalies in the number, structure or composition of the chromosomes, or they will divide abnormally during ovulation. This increase in the proportion of abnormal eggs, increases the risk of spontaneous abortion and the risk of conceiving a child with a chromosomal abnormality.
The risk of miscarriage: In pregnancy cases of women in their 40s, abortion rates are much higher. Since the increase was due to primarily chromosomal defects in the eggs, it's not something that can be corrected with medical intervention.
The risk of conceiving a child with a chromosomal disorder: At 40, the peril of conceiving a child with a chromosomal disorder is quite dismal. The risk of conceiving a child with Down syndrome – the most common of these disorders. Unfortunately, no known preventive measures can reduce these risks.
Preparing for childbirth: With maternal age increases the risk of complications of multiple pregnancy. These problems may include hypertension related to pregnancy. Due to these and other causes, women over 40 are more likely to require a cesarean delivery.
One third of fertility problems originates from a man. If the male partner's seminal analysis reveals a problem, it is important to talk with a health care provider about treatment options. To optimize the chances of pregnancy, the husband must also work to stay healthy, eat well and avoid alcohol, drugs and tobacco, which can affect the sperm count and quality. By taking good care of yourself, working closely with your health care provider, and maintaining some flexibility along the way, your prospects for having a happy, healthy baby are excellent. We wish you good health and good luck.
