IN what appears to be an expression of appreciation to a noble act, an investment organization is making a big dole out to a non-profit organization known for their rolling IT school.
Venture Philanthropy (VPP) said that they have allotted some $ 4.5 million to “Year-Up” so that the latter would be able to sustain what they described as a noble mission of hopping from one place to another, teaching kids on Information Technology.
Meet the Donor
VPP, an investment group known for its philanthropic social programs assisting non government organizations who are into educational outreach missions, was reported to be turning over the huge donation to Year Up early next week.
“Year-Up”, the recipient of VPP’s huge donation, has lately been getting noticed on their educational outreach programs, specifically on their effort to teach and provide young Americans with knowledge on Information Technology. Other than IT, the one-year old non-profit group was also said to be engaged in helping young Americans with short technical - vocational courses.
In a news story that was posted at the Washington Business Journal, VPP was described as “truly philanthropic” with the help that they have been giving to NGOs engaged in training people and preparing them for the IT era.
In a statement, VPP said that the donations that they have been making all these years are primarily designed to cultivate a culture of social responsibility among the members of the business sector.
VPP has earlier been acknowledged to be using resources, expertise and contacts to alleviate poverty in the United States, through funding community NGOs.
Closer Look at Year-Up
Year Up is a non-government organization engaged in the operation of a rolling school for indigent American families. Their rolling schools are noted for hands-on skill development for blue collared jobs, college credits for those who may want to earn a degree and corporate internship for those who would want to have an apprenticeship experience required before landing a job.
On top of these, Year-Up has engaged into IT education for poor young Americans. Under Year-Up’s IT program, participants are made to familiarize on two top aspects of IT --- Desktop Support - IT Help Desk and Investment Operations. Moreover, students are developed on the aspects of effective communications. Developing leadership and teamwork also comes in along with the package.
Aside from the free schooling, Year-Up, also provides stipend to their students for the duration of the course. Year-Up, which started with just 22 Rosslyn-based students, is now working on 144 heads.
VPP’s Fervent Wish
In choosing Year-Up, VPP however made one fervent wish --- for Year-Up to set an example for other NGOs to emulate.
VPP President Carol Thompson Cole said that they were impressed with Year-Up’s mission and the way they have been handling it. She said that they are expecting Year-Up to help more young Americans using their donation.
Cole, who also serves as VPP’s chief executive officer, said that America needs organizations like Year-Up even as she said that Washington has 33,000 Americans, who have finished high school, but can’t seem to afford college education. They also remain unemployed because no company would want to hire individuals lacking in educational attainment and skills to do the stiff requirements of a modern-day job. GP
