Scientists have recently announced a revolutionary and ideal spray-on skin treatment for stubborn venous leg ulcers. Ulcers commonly occurs with older patients, with limited to no mobility and usually involves open wounds on the lower legs or ankles. The wounds then become a serious threat because of the difficulty to heal, which exacerbates a number of other health issues.

The new spray-on skin closures consist of skin cells that are suspended in a mix of proteins and are designed to facilitate blood clotting. In a recent study, scientists treated more than 200 patients in North America and noted a marked improvement in wound closure on the lower extremities. The closures reduced the time needed for would closure.

In the past, many leg ulcers were slow to respond to standard treatments, and skin grafts were required in many situations. Researchers say that the new skin closures improve recovery and eliminate the need for skin grafts.

In the UK, venous leg ulcers occur in one person per 500, and the rate increases dramatically for patients who are over 80. Research shows that nearly 2 percent of people over 80 are affected. The UK statistics are found in a recent report that was published by the Lancet Medical Journal.

Venous leg ulcers are a common medical condition among elderly patients who cannot move. Ulcers usually occur when high blood pressure in the lower extremities damages skin cells. The severity of the condition is increased with age, when patients are immobile, with obesity but also with patients with varicose veins.

Standard treatments for venous leg ulcers consist of compression bandages, wound dressing and infection control. Unfortunately, these measures are often ineffective, and many patients have wounds that do not respond.

Because standard treatments are usually unsuccessful, skin grafts are commonly used to treat leg ulcers. Skin grafts require the removal of a section of skin, and this requires another open wound. For this reason, skin closures are an alternative to grafts and offer hope for venous leg ulcer treatment.

A scientist at the University Medical Centre Hamburg, Matthias Augustin, said that finding new therapies for ulcers is crucial because the problems are common and represent a huge burden to the health care field. Estimates show that the cost to treat venous legal ulcers in Germany is nearly 10,000 Euros per patient. Because the new treatment is highly effective, it offers hope to patients and doctors alike.
