There are a lot of things to obtain energized about with the newest J.J. Abrams indicate, Undercovers, premiering tonight at 8pm on NBC. Apart from an episode with the Office, it is the first time Abrams has directed a Television indicate since the pilot of Lost. It's also a fun, fast-paced action sequence that feels like a cross between Chuck and Alias without the serialized mystery.
But possibly the most astonishing point about Undercovers will be the leads, Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who play a married few of former spies introduced back again in to the game. Not just do they have the two coolest names on tv, but they're both black.
This really is critical due to the fact Undercovers is now the only present on the key network with black stars, until you count LL Awesome J on NCIS: Los Angeles or FOX's animated sequence The Cleveland Show (where, ironically, the lead character is voiced by a white man).
The stage is really worth noting because, for all of the speak about how progressive and post-racial this country is, Television is nonetheless a largely white landscape. Undercovers is really a enormous leap ahead when it comes to diversifying network programming. The reality that it is an incredibly entertaining display is icing to the cake.
And Undercovers just isn't alone this season in terms of diversity. The fall season also attributes a Hispanic lead (Jimmy Smits in NBC's Outlaw) and an Asian lead (Maggie Q in Nikita). What I love most about this pattern is that, in these new shows, race does not issue.
The fact that the stars of Undercovers aren't white is irrelevant to the story. Like most procedurals, regardless of whether they are about attorneys, cops, doctors or spies, the color of their skin has nothing to do with the real plot. However, despite this reality, there is nonetheless a lack of diversity amongst main roles.
Normally, when a network wants to add diversity, they'll cast an African-American because the wise-cracking greatest friend (see Mike and Molly) or cast an entire ensemble of Indian actors only to plant a white guy as the lead (see Outsourced).
So I give additional praise to J.J. Abrams and NBC for diversity. But none of that might issue if Undercovers was a bad indicate.
Luckily, it's full of extreme action, clever writing and extremely charismatic actors who assist make Undercovers feel like a mini Tv motion picture. If there is one thing J.J. Abrams knows how to do better than anyone else in Television, it is generating an entertaining pilot.

Possessing created a pact to never talk about their pasts with each other, the Blooms find astonishing new things about their partner within the course of every mission. They are aided by Leo Nash, a top rated agent who was as soon as Samantha's boyfriend, and geeky pc expert Bill Hoyt, who worships Steven. Lizzy is Samantha's sister, a recovering alcoholic who assists run the catering business and it is unaware of what the Blooms are really up to.
