There are reverse osmosis water plants in which water is treated. It is the transfer of solvent from a region of higher solute concentration to a lower solute concentration. The semi permeable membrane which is present in between the two sides only allows some of the ions to pass through it and does not allow bacteria or disease causing germs to pass. This helps in the process of preparation of pure drinking water.
Water is the most essential element present in the earth today. Whether it is used for breathing in case of fishes in water or for drinking in case of human beings; pure drinking water will be very important for all living beings present on earth.
Now before coming to the term Reverse Osmosis water treatment we should first know what Osmosis is. We all know that a solution consists of a solute and a solvent. Solute is generally the solid particle while solvent is the liquid part of the solution. There is a membrane in between these two sides. This membrane is said to be semi permeable. This membrane contains some very small pores which are permeable to water but no other compounds. Semi permeable means that it allows some things to transfer through it and does not allow others. The solvent tends to move from a side of lower solute concentration to a side of higher solute concentration. This is said to be osmosis.

Pure drinking water is becoming more and more valuable as days are passing by. There is a huge shortage of pure drinking water in many parts of the world. Therefore man has brought solutions to meet this gap. He has thought of utilizing the sea water and other waste water to bring it to drinking conditions. There are reverse osmosis water plants in which water is treated. It is the transfer of solvent from a region of higher solute concentration to a region of lower solute concentration. The semi permeable membrane which is present in between the twosides only allows some of the ions to pass through it and does not allow bacteria or disease causing germs to pass. This helps in the process of preparation of pure drinking water.

The process is generally seen to be used in the reverse osmosis water treatment plants where the water from the sea and other waste areas are being filtered. Through the process of reverse osmosis the salt and the water get separated and in the same case the waste and the water get separated. Thus the pure water comes out from the plant which is just suitable for drinking. However there are many chemicals which can still pass through the membrane and can make the water unhealthy. Another problem is the removal of some healthy minerals from the water and the slow process does not qualify it as a very good choice of bringing in pure drinking water.
