Retailers enjoy a Merry Christmas
|
This follows the release of the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) Distributive Trades Survey this week, which reported that 67% of its polled retailers said sales were stronger than this time last year, compared to just 11% who said they were lower. This gave a positive result of 57% on the survey’s scale, and is the sixth month in a row the poll has delivered a positive result.
Jewellers have told Retail Jeweller that trade has benefited from recent milder weather conditions following the heavy snow and ice experienced earlier this month.
Barry McCahon, commercial director of jeweller Lunn’s in Belfast, said: “Christmas was slow to start with because of the bad weather conditions, however, we’ve definitely seen an uplift since the weather improved.”
Jutta Pfannkuch, owner of jeweller Little 15 in London, said that despite the snow at the beginning of the month and reports of more expected, footfall has been up in her store as customers get into the festive spirit: “I was really pleased with our strong sales in November and it’s continued this month. Snow or not people have still been shopping.”
The positive mood has been echoed across the country and five-strong high street chain Robert Gatward, which has stores in Reading, Abingdon, Ipswitch, Thame and Windsor, is expecting its best Christmas yet. Owner Keith Gill said: “Footfall is definitely up and we’re seeing about 50% of sales volumes being driven by sales of Thomas Sabo, Pandora and Links of London. In the last five to six days sales have been phenomenal and I think it’s going to be our best Christmas to date.”
However, Peter Jackson, owner of five-strong jewellery chain Peter Jackson The Jeweller, which has stores in Preston, Blackburn, Southport, Carlisle and Bury, said consumer fears over the economy and job security has had an impact on his sales. He said: “It’s been the most challenging Christmas I can remember for a long time, but luckily we saved when business was strong for times like these. Our figures are a little bit down, but we’re doing OK. I think there is lots of insecurity and people are worried about their jobs but I think it will pick up towards the end of next year.”
Looking forward at next year, the survey reported that retailers are expecting growth to be slower, with a positive result of 35% of polled respondents expecting sales to be better than last year. However Pfannkuch remains positive about the coming months. She said: “I don’t think the VAT rise will have a massive impact and soon we’ll have people shopping for Valentines Day. Life goes on.”
