Aging is a natural process that cannot be reversed or prevented. Still, science is beginning to make headway in identify compounds and behaviors that can slow the effects of aging. The challenge lies in the fact that as time passes and people grow older, cells and tissues begin to break down, and in the process, lose much of the natural resiliency and strength of youth.
Humans use proteins and other nutrients to generate new cells and to maintain existing ones. This process is critical for a body to function normally. As people age, the process begins to reduce the number of nutrients that it allots towards the maintenance of tissues and the repair of damaged cells. Suddenly, a well-balanced diet may no longer be enough to ensure adequate cellular maintenance.
Enter supplements like Resveratrol, a potent substance found in a variety of plant species that has fascinated scientists for the last several years. According to laboratory data published by Harvard University, resveratrol activates a genetic trigger in the body called sirtuin. The sirtuin genes are known to stimulate responses in the body that promote additional nutrient allotment towards the maintenance and repair of cell structures and organ tissues.
Further studies have indicated that resveratrol may also reduce the rates of cellular decay and cell death, two things which increase as one ages. And the list goes on. Resveratrol seems to have the potential to boost metabolism and the immune system, to reduce risks associated with heart disease and to help eliminate free radicals and dangerous toxins in the body. The mechanisms behind how resveratrol works to actually achieve all of these benefits is still largely unconfirmed; nevertheless scientists are hopeful over the many positive results indicated in multiple studies focused on resveratrol to date.
More research is currently being conducted. Thankfully, Mother Nature has seen fit to provide abundant sources and supply of resveratrol to meet human demands. Grapes, certain species of nuts, and knotweed contain this wonderful substance. High purity resveratrol dietary supplements are becoming available commercially, offering “hope in a capsule”. Indeed, it’s not very often that you find one organic ingredient offering such an incredible array of potential benefits!
