There are hundreds of institutions that fit the description of a Fine Art School. Some are world-famous, while others are hardly known outside their state or region.

One way to find the right Fine Art School is to first research and short list institutions based on what, for example, the U.S. News & World Report and Princeton Review say about them. Next, you can extend your research to include College Board (CollegeBoard.com) search results, which will tell you about locations, cost & financial aid, housing & programs, admissions, and the like.

Here are a few names that your research may throw up:
• Art Academy of Cincinnati, OH
The private institution was founded in 1869. It is the smallest four-year art college in the country, and 'that's one of our strengths: It means our students really get to be themselves. They receive individualized attention from faculty, the freedom to develop their personal vision, and a unique opportunity to carve out their identity'. It offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

• California College of the Arts, CA
Founded in 1907, the private college's MFA program is designed to develop 'a sustained, critical practice [which] is an essential part of creating a dynamic career as a professional artist'.

• Kansas City Art Institute, MO
The private KCAI's School of Fine Arts offers ceramics, fiber, painting, printmaking, and sculpture as the majors. It was founded in 1885, and also offers fine arts certificate programs in painting, drawing, and mixed media.

• Maryland Institute College of Art, MD
A private institution, MICA offers an undergraduate program in general fine arts, and a post-baccalaureate certificate program in fine art. MICA was founded in 1826, and is 'the oldest continuously degree-granting college of art in the nation'.

• Memphis College of Art, TN
A private, professional school of art and design, MCA offers a BFA in fine arts with concentrations in drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. MCA also offers an MFA in studio art. It was founded in 1936.

• Montserrat College of Art, MA
Montserrat was started by artists in the late '60s who wanted to 'create a new kind of art school in Massachusetts for professional education in the visual arts - a school that would not only focus on the arts, but would also focus on the individual needs of each student'. A private college, Montserrat offers a BFA program.

• Pratt Institute, NY
Pratt was established in 1887, and offers an undergraduate degree in fine arts in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, and jewelry.

• Savannah College of Art and Design, GA
' . . . fine arts at SCAD go beyond intellectual and conceptual concerns to address advanced technical training.' A private institution founded in 1978, SCAD offers undergraduate and graduate programs.

• University of the Arts, PA
The institution's history can be traced as far back as 1870. It offers BFA programs in multidisciplinary fine arts, painting/drawing, printmaking, and sculpture.

Got questions? Why not call/e-mail/visit the institutions that interest you? Talk with their students. Ask open-ended questions. Have an open mind.
