Renaissance dresses for men from the higher strata of society usually comprised of a vest without sleeves, a knee length robe, shirts without collars but with very loose sleeves and frilly cuffs, an upper hose coming down to the knees and stockings extending from the knees to the feet. Renaissance Costumes for women belonging to the nobility usually consisted of large hoped skirts, dresses with loose sleeves opening up at the wrists, laced bodice, full skirt made of richly embroidered velvet and a low neckline. Fabrics used in the renaissance dress were dark blue, burgundy and green in colour. Brocade and velvet were the fabrics of choice for royalty, heavily embellished with embroidery, fur and jewels. Feathers and plumes were also popular as adornments. A renaissance dress worn by peasants and common people was plain by comparison and made of homespun fabric with little by way of embellishment. Common men wore long shirts without collars with long billowing sleeves, tightened at the wrist. Breeches formed the lower part of the renaissance dress, tied at the waist and then again from the ankle to the knee or ending at the knee with stockings worn below the knee. Simple, rough leather boots completed the dress. A leather belt over the shirt completes the dress. A common woman would wear a long straight dress with full sleeves tightened at the wrist. Contrasted to nobility, common women wore lighter coloured fabrics.
Pirates operating in those times had their style of dress bordering on the extravagantly flamboyant. A pirate dress usually consists of brightly coloured shirt, waistcoat and breeches with a silk sash tied around the waist and a leather sash diagonally across the shoulder. A tricorn hat with a feather in it and boots with jewellery and bandanna completed the pirate clothing outfit. A set of pirate clothing goes with accessories such as earrings, braids, ribbons, belts, buckles, wigs, sword and scarves for a colourful, swashbuckling look.
