The wedding rehearsal dinner is usually given by the grooms’ parents the night before the wedding. This may or may not be after a ceremony rehearsal. This gives the attendants a chance to learn their cues and such before the wedding.
The wedding rehearsal dinner is usually given by the grooms’ parents the night before the wedding. This may or may not be after a ceremony rehearsal. This gives the attendants a chance to learn their cues and such before the wedding.

The rehearsal dinner is usually held at the hotel or hall. Everyone gets together for a roast like setting where everyone gets a chance to say something about the bride and groom. This is also a way for the two families to get to know each other better if they do not already. This can be the time you give your wedding party gifts if you have not already. You can have this dinner as fancy or casual as you want. Some have full course meals while others have a small meal. It depends on what your taste is. Some families have had Chinese takeout brought in.

Who do you invite to this dinner? The wedding party usually brings their spouses and or a guest. The bride and grooms families are there. The out of town guests are usually invited as well because they came from out of town. If you just want it small and only family then have it a few days before and another dinner for the out of town guests and a few others. This is totally up to you. Most people only have it for the wedding party and family. The reception after the wedding is for the guests so you should not have to throw two parties beforehand.

During the rehearsal dinner you will want to have the toasts given. This is where you will toast your family. The groom’s dad usually is the first. He will welcome his soon to be daughter in law and her family into his. The groom may say a few words and then the bride’s parents say a few words as well to the groom and his family.

Rehearsal dinners do not have to be the same old traditional one. More and more couples are going with some of the more fun ideas of a rehearsal dinner. Some of these include:

• BBQ’s: Have a back yard party with all the fixings of a BBQ.
• Orient Express: Have Chinese food brought in and have Chinese lanterns and all the decorations of a real Chinese party.
• Bowl: Have a bowling theme party. The families can have fun seeing who can out bowl the other.
• Golfing: Some couples go out and have a golfing excursion for their dinner. Afterwards they go inside the club and enjoy burgers and fries.

As you can see your imagination is the only thing holding you back on planning a different rehearsal dinner. You no longer have to be tied to the traditional rehearsal dinner. You can plan out something to go with the theme of your wedding and plan it after your honeymoon destination. If it is a tropical place make it tropical in your backyard. Anything goes these days so have fun with it.
