This is an article about the maintenance of the undercarriage of earth moving equipment.

Equipment ranks as one of the largest budgetary components for any firm dealing in excavation. An inventory of graders, bulldozers and other earth movers may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Over time, lack of routine care shortens the lifespan of these expensive mechanisms. The undercarriage, in particular, needs to be placed on a schedule of regular maintenance.
In order to displace and remove dirt efficiently, all the parts of a piece of heavy equipment must work together. These enormous machines perform a wide variety of tasks. They excavate, dredge and shovel. However, no matter what the specific purpose of an earth mover is, its general function remains the same. The device must transport an immense amount of soil and its accompanying detritus from one place to another location.
All of these machines undergo tremendous stress when accomplishing their duties. If any portion of the whole is not up to its task, then the job will be accomplished more slowly. In some cases, the mission may even fail. Owners and operators must establish ongoing routines for inspecting their vehicles. They must also be alert for performance issues which may signal the need for unscheduled maintenance.
Frequently, problems first become evident in the mechanisms which support the frame, the cab and the inner workings of both areas. The tracks on which the machines run can become pitted and or out of line. Axles, joints and other assemblies also contribute to undercarriage difficulties. Addressing small annoyances early often keeps them from incapacitating expensive machinery which may be needed on a daily basis.
Innovations in earth movers have led to many features which enhance their operations. Developments by Caterpillar, in particular, have improved the performance of bulldozers, excavators and similar equipment. Steel blades increase the ability of the devices to push a wide variety of materials along in addition to soil. A mechanical digit on scoops allows the apparatuses to pick up items more selectively. The company has also built armored vehicles for use in dangerous environments.
These enhancements increase efficiency. They add to the speed and flexibility of individual machines. The features also mean, in some cases, that fewer vehicles are needed to accomplish tasks. However, the various technologies require maintenance which is specific to the equipment. In addition, it is important to perform needed renovations with parts which meet the standards of the original mechanisms.
In order to keep equipment functioning as required, owners must hire personnel with credentials established by the industry. Operators and maintenance crews should have knowledge which includes brand specific training. The integrity of the machines must be respected. Repairs need to be done with parts made by the original manufacturer. Using lower grade products may appear to be less expensive. However, such actions can decrease efficiency and shorten the lifespan of the vehicles.
Having the various systems of an earth mover work in harmony is the key to long term efficient operation. Any one part of the machine being out of kilter affects its ability to perform tasks. A properly maintained undercarriage supplies the foundation for a top notch earth mover.
