Julian Bernal studied marine biology and ichthyology for years and was the first ever to release a Spanish speaking television fishing show in the USA. His show, "Vamos a Pescar" was televised in Florida. He later became the first to televise a Reality fishing show on television and in English named, "The Fishing Challenge" in the West Central coast of Florida. Julian also wrote a weekly fishing column for three years in the Spanish section of the Miami Herald called, "The Fishing Forecast."
His work with the FWCC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) included such important tasks as the first ever translation of the rules and regulations of the state of Florida in Spanish. He won top angler, most release Blue Marlin and first place team in the Venezuela Billfish Shootout of 2005. He has appeared in live seminars for Florida Sportsman Magazine teaching, "Know the fish, catch the fish," which detailed fish behavior. Julian has lived in Costa Rica since 2004.
The areas of Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo in the Caribbean coast are just waiting to be discovered with its virgin and unexplored waters. The Pacific coast offers the most popular species of Billfish like the Pacific Sailfish, Blue Marlin and Black Marlin. These grand trophies of the sea are abundant in these waters and can be caught sometimes in great numbers. These and other pelagic species of fish like Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi-Mahi or Dorado are the most common fish caught offshore in these waters. While trying your luck inshore, there are plenty of choices and opportunities around the rocky coasts and beaches of the Pacific side. The prized Roosterfish, a member of the Jack family, is an incredible fighter and an absolute beauty, plus the Cubera Snapper is yet another great and large fish found all around these shallow waters of the Pacific coast. Amongst other species, you may find the Pacific Sierra Mackerel, Pacific Barracuda, large Pacific Jack Crevalle and several other species of exotic Jacks.
Although the bottom fishing in the Pacific side of this country is not popular amongst the anglers, there are several nice sized species like the Barred Snapper, the Yellow Snapper and others that provide some great action and table fare. Enjoy beachfront accommodations that includes a casino, restaurant, sports bar and souvenir stores in Jaco, plus Catamaran rides to Isla Tortuga, canopy/zip line tours, surfing and more or breathtaking Manuel Antonio with spider and white faced monkeys, sloths, toucans, scarlet macaws, iguanas and waterfalls.
Perhaps the most beautiful area in Costa Rica, and definitely the most visited, is La Fortuna and Lake Arenal located in the center of the country. Many people do not know about the great fishing opportunities available on this grand lake. Lake Arenal holds one of the most aggressive species of fish in the world, the Blue Guapote.
This large species of Cichlid is known for its aggressive nature, beauty and size. The Guapote can reach weights of more than 8 pounds and like its relative, the Peacock Bass - everything an angler can wish for. Guapote are strong fighters and considered a prized catch. There are several other species to catch on the lake. The Machaca is a member of the Piranha family and have large teeth to show. These fish are similar to a small Tarpon with their jumps and ability to escape a hook. Machaca do not reach large sizes, but are fantastic fun. There is also another smaller species of Guapote found on the lake, the Jaguar Guapote and there is plenty of large Blue Tilapia. Fly fishing opportunities are available. Take advantage of the fabulous accommodations that include hot springs, plus the most exciting adrenaline tours in all Costa Rica and the Arenal Volcano.
