Many people may not realize that radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. It is created due to the breakdown of uranium in rock, water and soil. Because the air pressure in your home is lower than the pressure in the soil that is surrounding your home, it can create a vacuum through which radon can come into your home. This makes it important for you to have Radon Mitigation, which can change the pressure between the soil surrounding your home and your house itself. Radon is an extremely dangerous, radioactive, cancer-causing gas. It is estimated that radon causes thousands of deaths due to lung cancer, and even the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US. Therefore, it is paramount to the health of you and your family to assess the radon levels in your home.
In order to determine if you need radon mitigation, you will need to conduct a test. There is no way you can see or smell radon, so a special piece of equipment is required in order to detect it. When you decide to test your home for radon, all you need to do is contact your local radon office or look on the Internet for a radon tester or kit. There are two different types of radon testing devices, and both are inexpensive to purchase. If you have done a test for radon in your home, and it reveals a level of 2.7 pCi/l (piocuries of radon per liter of air) or higher, you may want to seriously consider having a radon remediation system installed in your home.
Having a radon remediation system installed in your home is extremely easy, and the EPA recommends that you have a qualified radon mitigation contractor to install this system, because reducing radon levels requires a high level of specific, technical skill. If done improperly, the radon levels in your home can actually increase, which will exacerbate the potential hazards to you and your loved ones. For this reason, it is imperative that use a state certified or qualified radon mitigation contractor to install your radon remediation system. Every state is different, but most require that the radon professionals be certified, registered or licensed in order to install radon mitigation systems or even to conduct radon testing. Most states can provide you with an extensive list of experienced, licensed and knowledgeable radon service providers in your state. If you live in a state that does not regulate radon services, simply ask them if they have a certification from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Practice for Installing Radon Mitigation Systems in Existing Low-Rise Residential Buildings, E2121.
