Recycling Waste Oil Makes Good Sense

Recycling is a big part of the everyday operation of households and businesses alike. The recycling of certain products such as waste oil makes good sense from an economic standpoint too. Companies that provide waste oil recycling services add another revenue source while also benefitting from government incentives to collect these waste products.
Recycling is as much a part of the daily chores of American households and commercial businesses’ everyday operations as is taking out the trash and keeping an eye on inventories and material costs. Over a relatively short period of time the notion that we can continue to simply toss all of our trash into a pile with no concern as to the long-term consequences of this behavior has given way to the sounder path which is recycling those materials that can be reused.

The environmental damage caused by some of the trash that used to pile up in waste facilities dotting the American landscape was not as severe as that of others. Plastics products, metal containers and the like, while quite an eyesore, cause much less immediate destruction to the fragile ecosystems that support life on our planet than other waste such as pesticides, industrial solvents, and used mechanical petroleum products – waste oils.

With strict laws now governing the disposal of these products, as well as grass-roots movements in every community in the United States to collect and dispose of these contaminants, the dangers to the environment are slowly being reduced and the damage reversed. Used motor oil was a big culprit for many years. Now in most states oil is classified as a hazardous waste and must be either recycled or disposed of properly.

States like California generate more than 100 million gallons of waste oil each year, with only 10% of that oil being recycled to produce lubricants in a closed loop preventing both human health and environmental impacts. Oil that is not recycled is shipped out of state to be burned as fuel the result bring toxic air pollution and CO2 being released into the atmosphere.

But the tide is turning with many states providing financial incentives to entities that collect used oil and transport it to a used oil recycling facility. Electric utilities are also being brought into the loop with government incentives paid to these facilities for using used lubricating oil meeting specified requirements for electrical generation.

Many companies that provide other fuel and oil services now also recycle waste oil for their clients. These companies have trained employees and advanced equipment to remove contaminants, solids, and water from used oil. Their advanced reclamation technology extends the life of lubricants and equipment through filtration, dehydration, and the use of additives to restore the oil to a useful product.

For these companies it makes good sense to be a collection center for their clients used oil. In the first place, as has been previously noted, the incentives to collect refurbish and recycle these waste oils can be an additional revenue source for a company. In addition, clients don’t need to seek another provider when it comes to looking for a firm to recycle their waste oil products. And not to be underestimated its great public relations for any company that can claim that as a part of their everyday operation they are also doing their part to take care of the environment.

Recycling is an important part of the overall drive to keep the environment safe for future generations and while every individual needs to do his and her part, the impact of large industrial concerns also being part of the solution cannot be underestimated. And when it comes to recycled waste oils, this is one area where industry, the government, and the residents of every neighborhood in America are getting on the same page and working toward the same goal. It certainly doesn’t hurt that it might also make for good business to be part of the solution.
