Contrary to popular belief, online games can be beneficial for children. Most people, particularly parents, would beg to disagree. However, this is true as long as they don’t spend too much of their time playing video games. The market especially offers games that cater to the children. In the past, parents would disagree with the idea of having games made for their children. However, after a few studies were conducted on gaming and how it affects children, researchers concluded that online gaming also has its benefits, as long as the parents continue to limit their children’s gaming time. The benefits include honing of one’s social skills, more chances of doing well in school and better emotional intellect.
For one, online games can teach the children the importance not only of setting goals but also achieving them. For instance, the game Zuma requires the players to clear the boards needed to reach the end of the level. This is obviously the goal. In the process, the kids will take pleasure in the reward of reaching this goal. One way or another, this lesson can be applicable to their own lives eventually.
Second, there are online games that allow the children to play with other children from all walks of life. This will teach them the value of sharing ideas and taking turns. Additionally, they will learn how to socialize with different people and cultures around the world. This will be helpful to their social growth and development, even outside the virtual world. Joining multiplayer games will also teach them the importance of teamwork.
Studies and anecdotal evidence have also proven that video game players tend to develop superior hand-eye coordination and have surprisingly good motor reflexes in the hands and senses of timing than their peers. All of these have very clear applications in the real world.
A child can also develop his technological skills by playing online games. In these modern times, these skills are just as essential as computation skills. Computer and tech savvy people tend to get better jobs than those who aren’t. This kind of activity can greatly improve a child’s education and his career in the future.
Because of the games, children also learn to be technologically-savvy. Ultimately, this can be a big plus point when they start looking for jobs. This is n additional perk not only in their education, but in their professional career, as well.
Finally, there are online games that require the player to effectively multitask and learn the basics of micromanagement. Games like "Diner Dash" and "Virtual Villagers" require players to meet goals by keeping an eye on various aspects of the game that are in play at the same time. Success involves not only understanding when something needs to be done, but knowing how long that will take and factoring that into the handling of everything else.
After reading all of the above benefits, parents will hopefully have a change of mind regarding the way they oppose gaming so intensely. The keys are appropriate guidance and precautions. Yes, Internet safety may still be an issue but parents only have to be on the watch as their children try on these new hobbies. By being with them, they can ensure that the content that the kids are reading is appropriate to their age so that they won’t have to be exposes to unsuitable themes and languages.
