The name Ranchi comes from "archi" an Oraon/Kurukh word for the farmer's "baton" in use while ploughing. The area was an agricultural locality and Doranda (durang da' a Mundari word) was a better known place for its military base and garrison. Later on, the city developed as a crucial trade and commerce centre for sericulture as well as the leading manufacturer of shellac. Ranchi is also referred to as the ‘vegetable bowl’ due to thick vegetation of green vegetables in its villages. The city is now emerging as an industrial town apart from being known for its picturesque beauty. The place being rich in natural resources has helped various industries to flourish. Moreover the recent development in the city has made the city tourist-friendly. Hence Ranchi can definitely be among the top locations in your list of destinations if you visit India. Places to see:
Tagore Hill: The city of Ranchi has the Tagore Hill on its outer boundary. The hill was named after Rabindranath Tagore who was like a gem in the field of literature. At the foot of the hill lies the Ram Kishore Ashram.
Jagannathpur Temple: Jagannathpur is a hillock on which the Jagannath Temple is situated, built in 1691. It is 10 kilometres from Ranchi. The temple was built on the model of the Jagannath Temple of Puri.
Sun Temple: Situated about 39 km from Ranchi on the way to Dassam Falls. Private buses or jeeps available from Khadgarha bus stand.
Johna Falls: Johna Falls are located near the Purulia highway, 40 kilometres from Ranchi. It is also known as Gautam Dhara and is an ideal picnic spot, a must-visit for all travellers to Ranchi.
Dassam Falls: Dassam Falls about 40 km on Ranchi Jamshedpur Road, near Taimara village, on Kanchi river, the water falls from a height of about 144 feet.
How to reach:
Air:Ranchi is well linked to important airports in India, including Patna, Delhi and Kolkata. Ranchi airport is located at Hinoo, nearly 7 km away from the city center.
Rail: Ranchi Railway Station is on the South Eastern Railway and is directly connected with Calcutta, Patna, Rourkela, Delhi.
Road: Ranchi is well linked with many cities in Jharkand by state road transport corporation buses. The cities Bokaro110 km, Chaibasa 130 km, Dhanbad 170 km, Patna 340 km and Jamshedpur 140 km are all connected to Ranchi.
