Rajkot is one of the fastest developing cities located at in the center of Saurashtra region of Gujarat State situated on western part of India. Rajkot, the former Capital of the princely state of Saurashtra was founded by the Rajput Chief Kunwar Vibhuji in the 16th century, Rajkot is famous for its Bandhani Sarees, mirror-work, patch work, bead work and silk embroidery. The city does not have a long history. It was founded by the then ruler of Sardhar 1608 A. D. on the west bank of the river Aji as a small fortified town. Gradually, it became a Princely State in the year 1805. The British Government developed the old city area popularly known as Sadar during 1820 to 1870. By the end of 19th century, Rajkot emerged as a premier town having a population of 36,000. Rajkot was capital of Ex-Saurashtra State and has a central location in the region being a part of Gujarat State. Its importance as a capital is attributed to geographical location, its cultural heritage and the development potential possessed by the city. This bustling city was once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra and the headquarters of the British Government Headquarters. Today it is best known as the town where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life when his father was a Diwan or Prime Minister to the king of Saurashtra. Today Rajkot is a city vibrant with business activities and one of the major cities of Gujarat. There are many important places that you can visit during your trip o the city of Rajkot. This is because the city of Rajkot is deeply immersed in the local culture, and there are also many monuments and museums of public interest in Rajkot.
Places to see:
The Watson Museum and Library: It is located in the Jubilee Gardens, commemorated Colonel James Watson, political agent of Saurashtra from 1886-89. The entrance is flanked by two imperial lions. Among the exhibits are copies of artifacts from Mohanjodaro, 13th-century carvings, temple statues, natural history exhibits, and dioramas of local tribal costumes and housing styles. The museum is a good introduction to Saurashtra's cultural heritage. There is a huge marble statue of Queen Victoria seated on a throne.
Ramkrishna Ashram: This temple was built in 1934 on the land donated by Late Shri Dharmendrasinhji, then king of Morbi state. It is situated on Dr. Yagnik road of Rajkot. It is second most important place for followers of Swami Vivekanand after Kolcatta.
Race Course Garden: The Race Course in Rajkot is a famous haunt for the children for it includes several of their favorites in the city like Baal Bhavan, the Fun World and the Children Traffic Park. The race course also has a swimming pool of its own.
Jagat Mandir: It is made of red stones.Jagat Mandir is the beautiful carved temple of Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa.
How to reach:
Bus: STC buses connect Rajkot with Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Veraval and Ahmedabad.
Rail: Rajkot is a junction on the Western Railway broad gauge line.
Air: There is an airport in Rajkot and the major domestic airlines run flights between Rajkot and Mumbai. Indian Airlines has four flights a week to Mumbai while Jet and Sahara have daily flights.
