When it comes to nursing degree programs it is important to get the basics right. BSN stands for Bachelor of Science in nursing and RN for registered nurse. In order to become a registered nurse in the US, there are two types of degree programs that you can undergo. You can either go down the associate’s degree in nursing path or you can enroll on a bachelors of science in nursing course. If you choose the first option it will generally take you around 2 years to finish, whilst a bachelors of science in nursing will take 4 years to complete. Both degree programs will require you to take a certified examination before you can become a qualified registered nurse; this is called the national Council licensure examination, or the NCLEX-RN.
If you are a RN who has gained their qualification through an associates program then you will be actively encouraged to further progress their career by taking the bachelors of Science in nursing. Most nursing institutions and professionals will encourage most RN’s to take on the four year nursing program instead of the 2 year option as it is generally accepted that nurses who hold a BSN have more opportunities in terms of growth than those who hold an associates degree.
However, registered nurses who have achieved an associate’s degree in nursing do not have to undergo an additional 4 years of study for the BSN examination. This is because the two years it took to obtain an associates degree is fully accredited and it is possible to transfer the credit hours respectively. A RN will simply need to take on two more years of study in order to achieve a BSN degree.
The nursing profession actively encourages students to study to the highest of their potential therefore, there are plenty of bachelors of Science in nursing degree programs to choose from; and some hospitals even provide financial assistance for those nurses who are struggling to pay for their education. Now there are plenty of college and universities offering RN to BSN degree programs so you are sure to find a program to suit you.
So, what are the benefits of taking a RN to BSN program? The biggest difference is in terms of salary. As you will now effectively be an upper level nurse, you can expect to receive a higher paying salary. Completing a RN to BSN program can really open up doors career-wise as it can be the next step to achieving your dream job. If you are going for a supervisory nursing role, then you will almost certainly need a BSN degree in order to be considered. In general, most hospitals actually prefer nurses to have gone down the RN to BSN degree route as this will ensure that you will have spent a great deal of time soaking up the knowledge and experience necessary to be the best nurse possible. A BSN degree is also the best way to immediately get a well paid job in the nursing industry. In terms of personal achievement, a BSN degree ensures that you know exactly how to provide the very best care possible.
In order to get onto a BSN program, you will need to have a high school diploma however, if you are a RN, you will already have one of these as well as associates degree in nursing.
Nowadays, many colleges and universities are making it easier than ever for registered nurses to obtain a BSN and get back on track with their careers. You can choose from a range of accelerated programs; you can choose to take time off work and complete the degree as a full time student, but if this is not possible then you can attend night classes or even complete your degree online in your own time. If you are a registered nurse looking for the next challenge in your career then you should look seriously into obtaining a bachelors of Science in nursing.
