Purana Quila the Ancient Fort in New Delhi

Purana Quila also known as “Pandavo ka Quila” or Old Fort is situated on the banks of Yamuna. It is one of the oldest fort of the heart of India. The oldest name of Delhi was Hastinapur. During the Mahabharata, Hastinapur was ruled by Pandavas. Emperor Sher Shah Suri renamed it as Shergarh after defeating the emperor Humayun and afterwards it has been renovated.

In the Old Fort, Qila-i-Kuna is a single domed Mosque which was constructed by Sher Shah with pre-Mughal design. It also shows the widespread use of the pointed arch in the region as seen in its five doorways with the 'true' horseshoe-shaped arches. It is made up of Marble in the shades of red, white and slate. The prayer hall inside the mosque is very large in size. It is also said that there was a time when the courtyard had a shallow tank with a fountain.

On the south of the Mosque there is the Sher Mandal. It is double storeyed tower in octagonal shape. It is made up of red sandstone with the stairs going up towards the roof. It is said that it should be much higher than its height today but the works stopped after the death of Sher Shah. When Humayun recaptured it was being used as a library.

There is a chatri on the top of the tower holding by eight pillars and was decorated with white marble. There are remnants, decorated by plaster and shelves with stone where emperor’s books were kept. Here is the place where Emperor Humayun slipped while he was going for his namaz, fell headlong down the stairs and after two days of surgery he died.

Some of the Hotels are: Hotel Jan path, Hotel Imperial, Hotel Crown plaza, Hotel Broadway and many more. Most of the hotels in Delhi can be booked from any online hotel booking website in India.

Near to Delhi
