Pumpkin are fruits. A pumpkin is a type of squash and is a member of the gourd family (Cucurbitacae), which also includes squash, cucumbers, gherkins, and melons.
Colonists sliced off pumpkin tops; removed seeds and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. This was baked in hot ashes and is the origin of pumpkin pie.
Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites. Chris Stevens of New Richmond, Wi. had the world's heaviest pumpkin at 1810.5 pounds.

In 1584, after French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence region of North America, he reported finding “gros melons.” The name was translated into English as “pompions,” which has since evolved into the modern “pumpkin.”
Pumpkin are low in calories, fat, and sodium and high in fiber. They are good sources of Vitamin A, Vitamin B, potassium, protein, and iron.
The Connecticut field variety is the traditional American pumpkin.
Pumpkin is 90 percent water
The largest pumpkin ever grown was 1,689 pounds. It was grown by Joe Jutras of North Scituate, Rhode Island.
Pumpkin seeds should be planted between the last week of May and the middle of June. They take between 90 and 120 days to grow and are picked in October when they are bright orange in color. Their seeds can be saved to grow new pumpkins the next year.
Biggest Pumpkin
Breaking the world record pumpkin weight has become an annual event. So, it's no surprise to learn that the record was indeed broken again. What is a surprise, was the weight, a record smashing 1810.5 pounds!
Chris Stevens of New Richmond, Wi. brought his 1810.5 pound pumpkin, to the Stillwater Harvest fest in Stillwater, Minnesota, on October 9, 2010.
Pumpkin Chuckin
Using an air cannon to propel a pumpkin thousands of feet, is called "Pumpkin Chunkin," or "Pumpkin Chuckin."
The world record stands at 4,483.51 feet. That's over 3/4 of a mile! A team named "Young Glory 2" set this record in 2008 at the annual Pumpkin Chunkin contest in Nassau, DE.
