Many people choose to have a protein bar throughout their day and as a boost before a big workout, but if you're not choosing the right one, you might not be doing your body as much good as you previously thought.
|
Whether you're working out or trying to lose weight, the general idea is that good lean protein can be really beneficial in helping you to trim down and build muscle without the added fat that can accumulate on the body. Many people choose to ease hunger pangs before a workout or have a midday snack that will help to fuel them up through the rest of their day and choose something that's really healthy for them. This has made protein bars more popular than ever.
The problem with many of these "healthy" snacks is that if you don't choose the right one, you're only going to be filling your body up with sugar and carbs that can undermine your efforts to get - and stay - lean. That's why it's so important that you know what you're looking for and getting when you choose a protein bar.
Remember that protein might have more calories
Much of the time, people will think they are choosing a good "healthy snack" in a protein bar only to find that they are starving again in a matter of a half hour or so. As a general rule protein will burn more slowly in the body, so you shouldn't get hungry so quickly.
If this is happening to you then it might be time to reassess the protein bar you've been eating. There are some really great options out there for you to choose from that will give you a lot of the nutrient you really need. While you're at it, this might be a good time to take a look at the amount of carbs your bar has. Usually, if you're feeling hungry really quickly, it's because you've chosen a bar that's high in sugar or carbs and they burn quickly but have little nutritional value to your body.
You should also keep in mind that a good protein bar might actually have more calories than you think it should. Don't just put it aside though, because many of these are really good options and will keep you full and full of energy. Protein is lean, so it might have a few more calories, but it has much less fat than some of the alternatives out there.
Easy on the sugar
Yes, it is true that you want a protein bar to taste good, but it doesn't have to have too much sugar or sodium in it. If you can find a bar that uses some natural sweeteners, such as dried and unsweetened fruits, honey or even cocoa you might find that you really like it.
This is important because your body will burn the sugar first and then the protein, but any of it that's not used will simply be stored away as fat in the body. Your body is more likely to use all or almost all of the protein that a bar will offer and this will help you to stay lean and healthy.
In the end, a protein bar is a great way for you to get lean, build muscle and fight hunger but its important to take your time and read the label to make sure that you're getting the right ingredients for your total health.
