How Common Is Prostate Cancer?
Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American Men. The American Cancer Society's estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2016 are:
- About 161,360 new cases of prostate cancer
- About 26,730 deaths from prostate cancer
Risk of Prostate Cancer:
Prostate cancer develops mainly in older men. About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40.
Signs of Prostate Cancer Include:
Mentioned below are a few of the important signs and symptoms of prostate cancer. Check with your doctor, if you have any of the following:
- Weak or interrupted flow of urine.
- Sudden urge to urinate.
- Trouble starting the flow of urine.
- Trouble emptying the bladder completely.
- Pain or burning while urinating.
- Blood in the urine or semen.
- A pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn't go away.
- Shortness of breath, feeling very tired, fast heartbeat, dizziness, or pale skin caused by anemia.
Treatment for Prostate Cancer
You might not have prostate cancer treatment straight away. Instead your doctors monitor your cancer closely. Depending on your situation, the treatment schedule is called as: active surveillance & watchful waiting.
Active surveillance
Active Surveillance means the doctors monitor your cancer closely and you have treatment if the cancer starts to grow. Usually this approach includes a doctor visit with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA level) blood test and digital rectal exam (DRE) about every 6 months. Prostate biopsies may be done every year as well. If your test results change, your doctor would then talk to you about treatment options.
Watchful Waiting
Watchful waiting is slightly different than active surveillance. The doctors monitor your cancer and you start treatment if you develop symptoms. The treatment aims to control your cancer.
Active surveillance and watchful waiting are reasonable options for those patients with slow growing cancers because they don't know whether treating the cancer with surgery or radiation therapy will actually help them live longer.
Other Treatment Options Available for Prostate Cancer
There are many more options available for treating prostate cancer. Some of them include:
- Radiation Therapy
- Cryotherapy
- Hormone Therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Vaccine Treatment
NEW Vaccine Treatment for Prostate Cancer
PROVENGE is a prescription vaccine that is used to treat certain patients with advanced prostate cancer. PROVENGE is made from your own immune cells.
Surgery and radiation therapy remain the standard treatment for prostate cancer, but other, less popular treatment options like PROVENGE might be beneficial as well. Since PROVENGE is an immunotherapy that boosts your immune system, it should be used early on in your advanced prostate cancer treatment plan.
Conclusion:
Prostate Cancer is the most common cause for cancer related deaths among men in the United States. It has been recently proven that, if detected earlier, prostate cancer can be effectively treated and cured. Therefore, it is advisable for men to have an annual medical check-up in order to examine their prostate's size, texture, and general functioning.
