Mugs with a company logotype anyone? Are you cutting budgets this year? Are you being told to hold back on marketing spend? In tough times, the best investment your marketing department can make spells Promotional Products, and according to a recent study it's a far better and cheaper brand builder than any TV commercial or brochure.
Marketing executives often sneer at Promotional items as second-rate marketing, which has turned it into an unfortunate category thought of as "cheap give-aways" or last minute need-to-haves for trade shows. Not so anymore. Advertising agencies and creative directors, take notice!
The recent study by the Brand Steyer Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, clearly demonstrates that promotional merchandising is a significant contributor in building brand equity - at a fraction of the cost of traditional marketing. In the study, which measured results against Television, Print and Billboard against Promotional Products the following was identified:
- Promotional Products increased brand recognition rate with 5%
- 70% of respondents could not memorize which media campaigns they had been exposed to over the time period but could remember using Promotional Products such as branded Coffee Mug, Tote Bags or Key Chains.
- 65% of the respondents reported sharing or passing on the Promotional Products to at least 2 family members
The break down? Give your client a mug - they will remember it, and your brand will be seen by at least 3 people. European companies are taking after the study and the industry as a whole is seeing an order increase of 14%. US companies are just beginning to take notice. "This is an untapped goldmine", says Leif Svensson, head researcher behind the study.
The researchers at the Stockholm institute further found that 40 % of those interviewed indicated that the "quality and quantity of promotional merchandise played a significant part in the business decision making".
You read it right, and its good news for merchandisers worldwide - the promotional gifts you bring to the sales call have a significant impact on closing the deal you make!
So next time you or your team are out paying visit to prospect and clients, it's a smart move to plan your marketing budget and stock up on Promotional Products.
If you're in the process of slashing budgets or considering cost-effective ways to build your brand - don't rest on your laurels - consider promotional products and merchandise programs as the premier alternative to costly marketing activities such as TV or Print. Now we finally know what we always suspected - a gift goes a long way.
