The first rule when considering how you are going to improve the quality of your translations is give your proof readers/editors an easy job. That means, make sure that attention is given to detail in the first place. Good quality translations will require scrutiny of each word or phrase in the initial stages of the translation. Remember, it is tricky, time consuming and costly to try to improve on a poor job. The editing and proof reading can be very costly if mistakes are incurred en route to the editor. A quality translation means dedication, so don’t push a problem to one side to be dealt with later just because it seems like a difficult stumbling block. It is more efficient, will ultimately save you money, and ensure good quality translation if you work at it and sort the problems out. So, the next rule then is translate each phrase as you go along and don’t leave it to go back to later.
It is a very important and useful exercise if you are to concentrate on quality in your translations to keep a log problems that can arise such as words that can be confused with a similar word, such as personal/ personnel. Just one word can completely change the meaning within a text during translation. It is also a good idea to keep a log of regular mistakes as they are made and rectified so that they are not made in the future. These little processes will ultimately improve the quality of translation. It is of course, important to use the spell and grammar checks and this should be undertaken by selecting the whole document, but, do ensure that you re read following this instruction as it doesn’t always solve some of the problems to satisfaction.
To improve quality translation, remember that you must observe the typography and punctuation rules of the target language. Don’t just take it for granted that everyone will follow and understand the rules in English language. Never, never use the ‘replace all’ command as this will remove everything including improvements you have previously made.
To ensure quality translation re read everything before going to press. Sometimes when all the nouns and verbs appear present and correct, the adjectives and adverbs used may well be incorrectly translated reducing or changing the exact meaning of the text. Improving the quality of translation clearly requires in depth considerations that are often missed until it is too late to rescue without great expense and trouble. It is crucial to bear in mind the accuracy of the headers and footers where mistakes can lurk, these areas are often overlooked and can lead to problems taking into consideration the compatibility of the graphics to the word document.
Finally, to ensure quality translation always make sure second proof reading takes place.
