Every summer my family looks forward to the few weeks of vacation time we get to spend together traveling across this great nation. With great anticipation, we spend months gathering information, studying maps and websites on the Internet, before charting the routes to our multiple destinations. When the time finally arrives, we load up the RV, attach the boat trailer and head out to create great memories together.

Over the years, we have become knowledgeable on how to avoid minor catastrophes while out on the open road. Most of the learning process has come the hard way with its share of pain and frustration. Whether the lesson be learned from becoming stranded due to a dead RV battery or a flat tire, we have taught ourselves to be prepared for most anything, so as to circumvent the little things that could go wrong.

Lessons Learned

Our biggest lessons gave us the understanding that organization is key to ensuring our wonderful adventures will unfold without a major hitch. Although it is not possible to guarantee a completely successful holiday, being prepared for the unexpected does make all the difference. The short list of the things that will never happen to us again while we are out on a vacation include:

Using our marine battery charger to ensure that our boat motor will be able to start and bring us back to the dock after a great day out on the water.

Carrying a full water bottle and a can of bug repellent whenever we take our short hikes can make for an enjoyable walk.

Updating the maps on the GPS navigational device will help avoid major highway construction and make it easier traveling when driving a large RV and pullling a long boat trailer.

Replacing the RV battery every few years makes better sense than simply waiting for it to fail, which typically happens out in the middle of nowhere.

To avoid shortening the length of time we have to enjoy the great outdoors, apply sunscreen to all areas of exposed skin, even on days that seem too cloudy to cause a sunburn.

Prepare a box, cabinet or bag with all the first aid products for burns, cuts, bee stings, rashes, blisters, bruises, headaches and the flu.

When mapping out all the locations we wish to visit, locate urgent care facilities close by each destination and keep the addresses handy.

Stock the RV with food that cannot spoil, should the refrigerator be unable to operate. Remember that any perishable items should be purchased on the same day they will be eaten. While there are many unanticipated things that can happen when out on vacation, there are many things that can be avoided. Being equipped with the right sundry items, cooking equipment and cleaning products can certainly make the holiday run smoother.

Alternate Plans

There should be backup plans and alternative methods for everything the family wishes to do during the vacation. Should there be inclement weather, activities such as indoor games, or trips to museums can provide entertainment on an otherwise wasted day. Should the RV stove not function properly, carry an inexpensive charcoal grill in the storage unit of the camper.

Be Prepared

Remember that the equipment has been brought can only function if it has the ability to start. Bring along RV and motorcycle battery chargers, for all equipments that uses rechargeable batteries. Through good organization, a well thought out plan, alternative backup ideas and good common sense, every holiday or vacation the family spends together can be a once-in-a-lifetime event.
