The power protection systems are the need of the hour as they help in overcoming the complex problems of power failure and discrepancies that occur because of electrical device malfunctions.
What happens when electricity failure stops all the important ongoing activities of a large business unit? Obviously, it will suffer monetary loss. Power failures are commonly experienced happenings from factories and big business units to corporate organizations. However, the severe problem of power cuts can be solved with UPS and various other electricity generating equipments. Power protection gives a purpose of safeguarding essential electrical equipments, which are not only used commercially but also domestically important. There are various types of power protection tools e.g. UPS for PCs, Server rooms, Networks, Data centers, etc. amongst others.

Power protection devices are installed to safeguard several electrical sources like generator sets, high-voltage transmission networks, overloads, earth faults and low-voltage networks etc. Following points will highlight how the above mentioned electrical facilities get power protection.

Functions of Various Power Protection Devices

I.Relays are installed in power plants with a prime motive to prevent alternators of the transformers and generators from getting damaged. Usually, these equipments get damaged due to discrepancies in internal circuits or when they undergo insulating failures or regulation malfunctions.

II.UPS protection should be given to all high voltage transmission networks in order to safeguard the power plant as well as people who are residing or working there. Normally, the first level of protection to these kinds of electrical networks is to disconnect all the circuits as soon as possible at the time of an overload.

III.Alternate current transformers are used to provide protection to the earth faults by sensing an imbalance in its three-phase circuit. If an imbalance occurs in any one of its phases in the form of an over load, these transformers prevents it to exceed from its pre-determined value, thereby safeguarding the earth faults.

IV.Fuses or low-voltage circuit breakers are used to maintain low-voltage networks from getting overloaded and undergoing earth faults.

The market of power protection systems is well established with a number of manufacturers dealing in the design and development of a variety of them. Some of the popular power protection systems that are used on a commercial as well as on a domestic scale are critical power systems, UPS systems, stationary systems and battery systems, etc. Amongst all of the before mentioned, the UPS or power protection systems are used the most. This is because of the fact that they are highly sophisticated and requires less maintenance.
