During our senior secondary years, we had to do many school projects. Surfing the internet, concerning the books and taking ideas from the teachers or peers were mostly needed to accomplish the projects. I took the Arts stream and used to get projects on historical events, literary works of great scholars and so on. After submitting the projects, we also had to present a slide show before the whole class and the teachers. Based on our projects, the students and teachers present there asked us questions regarding the projects and we had to answer them. On the basis of our answers, we were graded.
There were students in our class who used to copy paste the material from the books or the Internet without understanding the concept properly. But in the long turn, it harmed them only. This sort of copying other people’s contents is termed as plagiarism. According to M.L.A. Style Manual “using another person’s ideas or expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source constitutes plagiarism”. In today’s world of the Internet, information about everything is easily available on the net whether it’s related to science, arts, humanities or anything else. In 90% cases, students have access to the internet and thus can easily access any information from it. In most cases, students, especially those who are in their middle school years, couldn’t understand the thing that they are getting involved in plagiarism.
Thus teachers need to tell them what it means and why they should not do this. The educationists all over the world are taking this issue seriously because it is harming the standard of education worldwide. When students copy others works or ideas without understanding its meaning, their academic basis actually get harmed. Pressure of the school projects and the limited time given to the students to accomplish these projects often become the root cause of plagiarism. Moreover, teachers often do not make the school children aware about how to write a particular project or how to place different data in a project paper. In such conditions, the children better prefer to go for copying the material from net or from books. In some cases it is noticed that students copy the whole research projects without changing anything.
The school authorities should take strong action towards such illegal activities as these are ultimately harming the productivity of the students. Plagiarism has become easier than ever before with the help of computers and the web. To stop this in the school level, many schools have set up plagiarism checker in the schools. This kind of software helps the teachers to detect the duplicate contents in their students’ projects. Moreover, if a student is caught doing plagiarism, the student get punishment from the school authorities so that other students do not follow that. While we can all agree that plagiarism is bad and the students who do cheat deserve serious punishments, we have to recognize that not all cases are so clear. It is up to the administrators and the students to decide if any rules were broken and to help those who may have unwittingly run afoul of the school’s code.
