Madrid is a Spanish region that has only one province. It is located right in the middle of the peninsula encircling the city itself, since the time it was made the capital in 16th century. The city of Madrid was established by the Moors during the 9th century and has been transformed into the modern and vibrant city as it is today, with lots of tourist attractions.
Highlights of Madrid
It holds an immensely large architectural heritage that has been preserved on structures and building around the city such as Plaza de la Paja. Another interesting site is the ‘Madrid of the Austrian’ which is situated close to Puerta del Sol, an ancient city centre that was constructed during the Golden Age. This part of the city where Plaza Mayor stands is one of Spain’s finest structures with impressive and distinctive colonnades.
The 17th century Baroque ‘Plaza de la Villa’ is located in the building which houses City Hall. The 18th century royal Palace is a splendid work of palatial art that is encompassed by lush gardens all around, but not fully accessible by the public at the moment. Nevertheless, there are plenty of spacious public gardens and parks since 19th century, such as the Botanical Gardens, which was set up through the royal decree in 17th century, Casa de Campo Park and the refreshing Parque del Oeste garden.
From parks to museums, Madrid is full house with art galleries for your artistic viewing pleasure such as Prado Museum together with its extension ‘El Casón del Buen Retiro’. Another Madrid’s museum is the one that displays archaeological collections of every culture that has touched the Spanish soil; whereas Reina Sofia Art Centre is more focused on Picasso’s abundant art treasures such as the ‘Guernica’.
King Phillip II chose the splendor of Guadarrama Mountains to have his palatial Renaissance monastery cum palace, built aptly calling it ‘San Lorenzo de El Escorial’. This great work of architecture was undertaken by Juan de Herrera who was considered as the greatest Spanish architect of that Renaissance era. This monument was very influential, as it was significant in appearance over the Spanish Empire territories.
Cervantes’s birthplace is Alcala de Henares and rightly so, turned into a distinguish university sometime in 16th century. Many architectural treasures can be located in the old building of the University.
The refreshing village of Aranjuez was developed as a royal residence for the royalty’s holiday. It has a splendid park right at Tagus River banks.
