Overview
The municipal village Vilaflor is located on Tenerife Island which is one of the Canary Islands and is a part of the province – Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The meaning of the Spanish word Vilaflor is “Village of Flowers”. It is situated at an altitude of 1500 M and is Tenerife’s highest village. The distance between this village and the capital of the island – E of adeje is 90 KM whereas the Tenerife South airport is 25 KM from here. This town was founded in the 16th century.
The population in this village is about 1800 and it is well connected to the motorways from Arona and Playa de las Américas. There are farmlands in the valley and Teide is located in the northeast. In the southern part of the village there are grasslands whereas there are forests in the valley area. In Teide, the north central area is covered by Forests. The area features the footpath Paisaje Lunar and also the Fuente Alta mineral springs at a height of 1400 meters above sea level in a protected nature reserve. Fuentealta, manufacturer of bottled water uses this mineral spring.
Climate
The average temperatures in a year are as follows:
Maximum – 20 °C in the month of July
Minimum – 7 °C in December-January
Art and Culture
Calle Santo Domingo is the main street in this town and this leads to the large plaza at the center. There is a 17th century Church – San Pedro which is quite impressive. The view point, Mirador San Roque is situated near the plaza and you have to walk along the steep road from the plaza. From this viewpoint you will get a fantastic view of the southern Tenerife’s slopes.
There is a San Roque park by the side of the viewpoint and there are a number of buildings in this place. One of these buildings is Guanche life museum. There are not enough exhibits in this museum and hence they exhibit wall charts and some live enactments which will educate you on the native islanders’ lives.
Shopping
There are a large of number of handicraft shops wherein you can purchase gift items – lace and carvings made of wood. It is possible to watch the painful process of lace making at Artesania Delfina that is a small shop.
Business & Economy
The economy of this town is driven by agriculture. Since it is not on the coastline, tourism is not all that important. However, there is a spillover of tourists from Teide area.
