Albarracin is an incredible city in Spain. It is placed in the province of Teruel, which is a part of the autonomous community of Aragon.

Albarracin is 1,171 meters above the sea level. It is located on a peninsula formed by the Guadalaviar River. Albarracin has great landscapes made of amazing canyons, cliffs and rocks on one side and valleys, meadows and vast forests on the other side. Flora and fauna are also incredible. Lovers of nature will enjoy this place to the fullest.

History is sometimes so fascinating…

This town had a very important strategic position in history due to its location. It is situated between the borders of three countries-kingdom of Castilla, kingdom of Aragon and kingdom of Valencia.

Albarracin is packed with historical monuments. It is nice to stroll down the narrow streets in order to observe the surroundings and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere.

This town gives an impression of being frozen in the past. A simple walk will give you a feeling that you are traveling through time.

There are plenty of monuments in Albarracin such as the Church of Santa Maria, Episcopal Palace, Cathedral, some mansions, etc. There are also unique folk architecture sites such as Julianeta house, the house in the street Azagra or the square of the Community.

Gypsum is the specific material that is used in Albarracín’s architecture and amazingly, it is used even more than stone. This type of architecture is lighter and it reduces the volume of the used material.

Historical sites are very well preserved and above all they are very picturesque. Furthermore, there is a castle on the top of the city. You should keep in mind that it is not easy to climb up there, but it is worth trying since you can enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Albarracin as a monument

The territory of this town is a part of the national park. Everything is under protection of the state. Above all, Albarracin has been declared as a National Monument since 1961. However, it has not yet been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Buildings with Moorish features talk a lot about the tumultuous history of this city. Albarracin, through history, has always been a solid fortress because of its location.

The Queen Isabel of Castilla and King Ferdinand of Aragon married in Albarracin in order to unite the Spanish Kingdoms. There are lots of aristocratic houses from the middle ages.
