Have you ever heard of a rocky medieval village named after the Visigoth king Alarico II?
Alarcón is a village in central Spain and it belongs to the province of Cuenca. It is 87 kilometers away from the city of Cuenca and 187 km away from Madrid. It is surrounded by many hills and it is located on 60-metre high cliffs.
Alarcón is a medieval place with narrow streets, centuries-old houses, churches, a large Pedestrian Square and a castle.
Alarcón was probably founded by the Visigoth King Alaric II (originally Alarico II).The castle is an 8th-century Moorish fortress situated in the most dominant place in the village. From that fortress you can enjoy an outstanding view.
Fairy tale city…
And just when you thought how this place is almost perfect ... there is more... Alarcón lies on the deep blue river Júcar. This village provides a great opportunity for relaxation. You can take a walk through the narrow streets or the bank of the river or even enjoy the rocky landscape which surrounds the Alarcón. If you decide to visit Alarcón, you will get back refreshed and awakened.
An anchor in time
Alarcón is so quiet. Perhaps it is the case since only 191 inhabitants live here. This is a very small place, where you can find a lot of unusual details and picturesque landscape. Narrow medieval streets and stone houses will take you for a walk in the past. Perhaps the biggest attraction is the castle itself. If you have a chance, you should definitely sleep in one of the 13 guest rooms in the castle and enjoy the medieval weapons and the ceilings decorated with armor. You will enjoy every second that you have spent in this peculiar place.
It is not so easy to find fairies and elves here but...
Alarcón looks like a preserved museum exhibition. It is simply amazing that in the very heart of Spain you can find a specific place such as Alarcón. Flora and fauna are also of incredible beauty. Therefore, this place is so attractive.
The most beautiful thing about Alarcón is that it is an untouched and very quiet place either for living or for vacation. Very few people know about this unique place and this is an advantage as well.
So, when next time you are planning your vacation to Spain, remember to add Alarcon to the list of the destinations to visit!
