This is a part of the Castile and Leon province located in the North of Spain. This moderately populated city was under the occupation of Romans and later rulers of many other civilizations like Hispania, Visigoths, Moors and later Christians took over the city. Many religious groups belonging to some of these earlier civilizations can be seen even to this day in Burgos and they live in an environment of perfect harmony with each other. Burgos has many places which are of interest for the tourists. Some of the places of tourist attraction are mentioned here briefly:
Entry to the city:
Locals advise the tourists to enter the old city through a place called ‘Arco de Santa Maria’ which is actually a gateway to the city. The gateway is most intricately carved. That gives a very pleasant welcome to the tourists. This entry welcomes the tourists with statues of some of the dignitaries who were instrumental in putting the city on the tourist map of the world and these people have toiled hard for the overall development of the city.
Cathedrals and churches:
Burgos has many important cathedrals and churches. They are Chapel of Condestables, Monastery of Las Huelgas and Monastery of Miraflores. The church of Lerma, San Estaban, San Pedro, Santiago, San Lesmes and San Lorenzo are some of the most popular churches. In addition to this, the city has some of the most popular architectural sites like the wall of the city, Gateway of Santa Maria and the arch of Fernan Gonzalez.
Gothic cathedral:
This church is believed to have been built in the year 1221. This is one of the masterpiece works of architecture. This most beautifully designed cathedral has towers which end in octagonal spires. These spires comprise of stonework throughout the entire cathedral. In the middle section, there are pictures which speak about the martyrdom of the saints. The interior of the cathedral is beautifully decorated with works of art and artifacts. The cathedral bears typical Gothic design. Sacristy’s exterior has beautiful sculpture works and most beautiful figures of angels, armored knights, etc. The interior of the cathedral is luxuriously carved and it bears the paintings of many angels. The statues both inside and outside the cathedral speak of the mastery of the sculptors who carved them.
Cartuja de Miraflores:
This monastery has a treasure and that is the statute of St. Bruno. This wooden statue is most revered by people from all over Europe. The choir stall made out of wood and the mausoleum of King John II and Queen Isabel are the other works which deserve to be seen.
