The Fall in Phoenix is wonderful expect for the fact that fall is when we really start preparing to fight the battle of the roof rats here in the Phoenix area. Unfortunately, we know all too well that roof rats have really established themselves here in the Phoenix Metro area over the past six or seven years and have spread across the valley over the past couple years. It seems that these pests are acclimatizing to our arid desert very well, and we are actually starting to see trends in roof rat’s behavior now that they are here for good.
Many people over the past few years have taken a crack at trying to control the roof rats, from Sheriff Joe and his posse placing poison baits throughout the neighborhoods, to a young 9 year old boy who was banned from marketing himself out to his neighbors doing some sealing to homes to try and stop the roof rats (unlicensed activity), only to find out that the roof rat was more clever than they all thought. That’s right, the rats are still here and thriving, in spite of all that have attempted to eradicate the little invader.
The general public has finally come to the conclusion that a professional pest control service is a must when roof rats are involved and effective results are wanted. Roof rats are the professionals of rodents, when you have this rat, you got serious needs for someone who has experience in not only removing the roof rat infestation, but also protecting your property from damage caused by roof rats, such as their gnawing, urine and excrement left behind, never mind the potential disease carried by the roof rats and their waste.
Roof rats enjoy the outside environment we have here in the summer as it offers all they need to survive – plenty of food from fruit and nut trees and plenty of harborage. But like all other pests, they will need protection from the cold as winter comes. This is the perfect time of year to get a jump on the roof rat buy having a comprehensive inspection on your home, looking for any holes, cracks and/or crevices large enough for a rodent to enter into your structure, and screening and sealing prior to the roof rat entering into the building.
Begin an early trim of the trees, making sure they are not overhanging your roof line and easy access for a rat to travel up to your home. Clear any excess debris from your property; make sure there are no areas where insects, mice and other pests including the roof rat can live in or under. If you have fruit trees, harvest the fruit as soon as it is ready, don’t leave excess fruit on the trees, this only invites the roof rats to your property, and soon they will look for a place close to the food to live (this could be inside your home).
Many people also feed their pets outside on the patio, keep in mind, the roof rat will eat the pets food as well, so only put out enough for the meal, try not to leave extra food sitting in the bowls. This will also help reduce other pests as well, such as ants and pigeons, who are happy to make a meal of the dog food.
I know this is a lot of information to take in at once, so for more on preparing your property to avoid the infestation of roof rats, feel free to contact Invader Pest Management for more advice.
