Many people dream of an oasis where it is warm, sunny and unspoiled. They would like to move their family to a place that has fresh air, open spaces and a healthy environment. They hope they can find one that has bright skies and happy people. The place is Phoenix, Arizona in a snapshot. People want to live in Phoenix homes not only because there are so many fantastic things to do and the people are so welcoming, but also because it’s one of the nation’s top cities when it comes to conserving resources and preserving its lovely environment.

If you are considering a move to Phoenix, you will be happy to learn that there are over 80 current solar and renewable energy projects in the area. The City of Phoenix has always taken a stand that the community should be “Living Like it Matters.” Instead of being content to just soak up valuable resources, this city helps generate solar powered energy to run its buildings. They’re a rarity in cities today as their efforts are up and running and they’ve proven what can be done with determination and drive. Some of the many projects that are ongoing in the area include:

* Central Avenue Solar Transit Huts - The Phoenix Transit system has installed solar-powered canopies along Central Avenue that help generate electricity. Since 1991 they have been generating 1.5 kilowatts of power each that’s used to light the night and help raise the security of the area.

* Skunk Creek Landfill - A classic example of turning lemons into lemonade. The landfill project uses the methane gas produced by the garbage to generate 3,000 kilowatts of power. The number of Valley homes that the plant is likely to provide electricity for is estimated at approximately 2,000.

* North Mountain Park Visitor Center - This community landmark was redone to include solar roof systems that generate enough electricity to run the place. They also have a display that allows visitors to watch the energy being generated. Many teachable moments there.

* Phoenix Convention Center - This beautiful downtown Phoenix meeting place is not taking up resources, but instead is self-sustaining. The Arizona Public Service department has worked with the convention center to install roof systems that harness solar power and provide electricity for the entire building complex.

* Pecos Community Center - The public can see just how much power is generated by this ingenious center. Internet users can log on and monitor how much energy is being produced by the solar roof system. The City of Phoenix and the Salt River Project have worked together to ensure that the building uses virtually no utility power to sustain its own electricity.

Phoenix is definitely a forerunner in the efforts to generate more sustainable energy and make better use of resources. It’s a fantastic place to live, work, and raise a family.
