Personal media players have come a long way from being big bulky cassette player or CD players to being purely digital media players which can carry thousands of songs within them without the need of changing cassettes or changing sides. Also the user now has the freedom of changing tracks as an when he wants and skip through them with ease instead of waiting for the song to get over. Although there are other version of such portable media players with large displays that don’t just play music, such as the iPod Touch which is a portable multimedia device that offers features like movie playback, ability to take images and record videos, play games and a lot more.
But today we will just talk about some of the smallest most useful media players that are strictly for playing music and in some cases used for voice recording too. These include players from manufacturers like Apple, Sony, SanDisk, and Phillips.
SanDisk Sansa Clip+
The SanDisk Sansa Clip+ is a very inexpensive media player with a solid, pocket-friendly design along with dedicated volume controls and comes with a built-in belt-clip. It's very easy to use and it offers its users a plethora of handy features, one of which include a MicroSD card slot, with Rhapsody DNA, along with a voice recorder, an FM tuner, and support for FLAC, OGG, Audible, and podcasts all at a meager price of around Rs. 4000. It has an internal capacity of 8 GB so with a 16 GB card you can get a total capacity of 24 GB which at this price is a steal. It also has a tiny OLED display that shows you what track you are playing.
Apple iPod Shuffle
The iPod Shuffle has returned to its days of having big buttons and this time round it brings with it support for playlists, audio books, podcasts, Genius Mixes, and a new multilingual Voice Over feature that now announces information like track information, battery status, and menu navigation.
The only new thing it can show off physically is its Voice Over button which is located on the top edge of the player, pressing the voice over button once will reveal a synthetic voice which will announce the artist and song title of the currently playing song. Pressing the button twice tells you the current battery life percentage and finally holding down the button for a few seconds will take you to a menu mode where you can use the track skip button to switch between any of the synced playlists, Genius Mixes, audio books, or podcasts. It can also be configured in iTunes to speak in one of 25 languages. The Shuffle is has been rated for about 15 hours of playback time, with a full recharge in about 3 hours. As of now it only comes in 2GB capacity priced at around Rs. 2,500.
Apple iPod Nano
The Sixth generation iPod Nano is nearly half the size of the previous model and it uses a unique multi-touch screen for navigation, and includes a built-in clip. Obviously one of the most impressive features of the new Nano’s is its size. Apple has reduced the size of the Nano by nearly 50 percent while providing a 24-hour battery life, with generous capacity options that include 8 and 16 GB models and existing features such as music playback, an FM radio which you can pause, Genius Mixes, podcasts, audio books, photo gallery, clock, stopwatch, pedometer, and support for the optional Nike+ fitness system. Apple devices have always been known for music quality and the Nano is no exception. In fact, music quality is a strong point.
