Then try a rickshaw ride through historic neighbourhoods called hutongs, sampling Han-style Beijing snacks. Don’t miss out on any opportunity to savour some fragrant Chinese tea. Most local restaurants serve Peking Duck, a speciality you cannot leave Beijing without trying. One of the main highlights of Beijing is the night food market. There you will find everything from stir-fried starfish to scorpion-on-a-stick. For the less adventurous, local favourites like barbecued shrimp balls and sugar-glazed hawthorn make for a delightful treat. Don’t miss a visit to the Great Wall of China while in Beijing.
Travel to Xian:
Xian has some of the most popular attractions including the Imperial Summer Palace and Terracotta Warriors. Other places you can visit are the Bell and Drum towers, the Muslim quarter, the Grand Mosque, the Wild Goose Pagoda and Xian Art Museum. The night food markets of Xian serve up an eclectic mix of Central Asian, Persian and Chinese cuisine, so there’s plenty of scope to experiment and sample wonderful dishes that you may never have heard of before. One dish you must try is Xian dumplings, a local favourite.
Visit Guilin and Yangshuo:
The cuisine in Guilin is a wonderful combination of Hunan and Canton flavours and cooking techniques. Visit the street food markets to sample some amazing dishes. One great experience to try in this part of the country includes a cruise along the Li River that will take you to Yangshuo. Don’t miss a chance to click pictures of the stunning rock formations that rise up from the river banks on both sides.
