Experts are slowly piecing together the chronic-pain puzzle, but they still are not sure why certain pain becomes chronic. In the meantime, pain costs about $100 billion a year in lost wages and medical expenses, according to John Reeves, president of the American Pain Society. Chronic pain, whatever the cause, is a problem for a large number of people. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies indicates that 14.4 percent of the United States population between the ages of 25-74 suffers from definite chronic pain related to the joints and musculoskeletal system, the most common source. Another 7.4 percent endure chronic pain from an unknown source, unsure of how long it will last. That is almost 22 percent of the population wincing in pain every day. Interestingly enough, the Center found 18 percent of chronic pain sufferers also have depression. Which came first, the pain or the depression, is hard to tell It is true that stress lowers the immune system, which can bring on problems of chronic pain, but at the same time, I can not think of anything more depressing than coping with this suffering.
Apparently emotions do have an effect on pain. A study reported in the Journal Of behavioral Medicine said that out of 142 people suffering chronic pain, the strongest predictor of who hurt the worst was the degree to which they held in their anger. In other words, vent and ye shall be free! The Bible says, “pulling out every root of bitterness. “ Does this mean that the angry young man at my dry cleaners never feels pain? Not when I pay the bill! The author of the study, Robert Kerns, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry, neurology and psychology at Yale University explains it like this: Unexpressed negative emotions may actually suppress the immune and endocrine systems.
These systems are believed to play a role in dimming the experience of pain. Without them functioning at full force, pain tolerance may be reduced.” This might explain the depression connection, since when you are depressed; you are not exactly fighting back.
I found the following research very interesting because I know good mental health is dependent on B vitamins. Anything that causes depression probable contributes to chronic pain, based on what we now know.
I know of a study in which it was proven aspirin did not work unless accompanied by magnesium.. Thiamine is found in the germ and bran of wheat, the husk of rice, and that portion of all grains which is commercially milled away to give the grain its lighter color and finer texture. A diet rich in brewer yeast, wheat germ, blackstrap molasses and bran will provide the body with adequate thiamine. Eating sugar will cause a thiamine depletion, as will smoking and drinking alcohol. Thiamine can be destroyed by cooking and by an enzyme present in raw clams, oysters and raw fish.
