Risk in investing is the possibility of losing. But what every beginner wants is certainty. Incidentally risk and certainty are very much like the Chinese yin and yang. They co-exist. By shying away from one, you end up in the mouth of the other.

For example, if every investment in stocks is a certainty (sure fire profit of 4900% all the time), then everyone would want to grab a piece of it and share prices would skyrocket to the moon. There would be no penny stock to speak of. Isn’t that risky to the average American?

On the other hand, if every investment is an absolute risk, then no one would stay within a mile from a stock exchange. The engine of capitalism would stop. Isn’t that a grim certainty to the average American?

Imagine what kind of world we would have under either conditions. Would we have democracy? Would we have prosperity?

Think about that.

In reality, our job as investors is very similar to the political exercise of voting for a public official. We find out who they are and what they promise. Then we either vote for that candidate or not. The rest is taking the consequence of our decision and making corrective measures, if needed.

So, what we do is look for the promising stocks and vote for them. Many of these stocks are fresh from the ore of the business world. They sparkle in mud. It takes expertise to spot them from a heap.

What we do is extract the gold and study it more closely. After that, you either buy it or not. Then you take the consequence of your decision. One who buys gold profits big time.

Minimizing Risk 101 is to not walk blind. Minimizing risk is about research, research and research. We study, study and study. By understanding each risk --- not running away from it --- we increase certainty.

Do you see the yin and yang picture more clearly now?
