Mrs. Bhargav watched her son read out the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. She was listening very carefully to his pronunciation of words and though she wanted to rush to her son when he fumbled with the words, she restricted herself, and waited till he finally finished reading. She mentally took note of the areas where he got stuck. After Amar finished reading, she took the book from him, gave him a hug for reading so well and then got some snacks for her son. Later in the day she came back to the same story and made her son pronounce the words he had got stuck with by making him repeat the words after her, over and over again till he got it right.

The next day, Mrs. Bhargave made Amar red out the story again and it was so much better. Mrs. Bhargav did what lots of parents don’t find the time to do..encourage their chidren to pick up a dying art…reading. With the advent of the Internet and educational software, children barely like to read. This has lowered their stamina for textual content. This has made a number of parents concerned about their child's progress in reading. Young children learn about reading by seeing their parents read the newspapers, books, maps, and signs. Reading to your preschooler differs slightly from reading to your child in class 3 or 4.

Preschoolers have to be taught the conventions of reading which is reading from left to right and from the top of the page to the bottom. They have to be taught the basics of any language consist of sentences which in turn are made up of words. Also, due to their limited span of view, you should run your index finger under the line of print as they read or while you read to them, when they are beside you. Parents with pre-schoolers at home should provide them with flash cards, and colorful books at home so that it extend their child's natural interest in the world around them. By encouraging and modeling leisure-time reading in the home, parents take the most important step in fostering their child's reading development.

Current research in reading reveals that:-

1. Children fond of reading eventually become better readers.

2. Since writing is a complementary skills as they learn to read, they also learn to write.

The role of parents with regard to improving their child’s reading skill:-

1. Write notes for your school-age child; encourage written responses.

3. Provide a variety of reading material for your child.

4. Establish a reading time, even if it is only ten minutes a day.

5. Encourage activities that require reading for example, the instructions of a game.

6. Encourage your child to issue a library book home.
